Abstract. This article gives a detailed description of the development of an experimental sensor beam support with an integrated load cell, in this paper also named a smart support. The smart support is designed as a part of a beam bending experimental apparatus. For small universities, the financial effort needed to equip experimental mechanics labs is considered unjustified for the purpose of undergraduate mechanics classes. Thus the majority of experiments conducted in mechanics and similar classes are done during lectures as 5-minute presentations using available, inexpensive and simple apparatus. Such apparatus was produced in faculty workshops, by students as a part of undergraduate theses or projects with sponsoring companies. This article describes a process of building experiment apparatus through the student undergraduate theses and cooperation with local companies. It also shows the current state of beam bending apparatus at University North and the process of creating the initial design of a smart support. Some properties of two typical versions of load cells containing strain gauges were investigated using numerical simulations. According to load cell shapes, two different design solutions of smart support were proposed. The final chapter describes future plans to create data acquisition and ideas for developing further experimental modules or devices for various other experiments.
This article describes the procedure of calculating deflection of rectangular plate using a finite difference method, programmed in Wolfram Mathematica. Homogenous rectangular plate under uniform pressure is simulated for this paper. In the introduction, basic assumptions are given and the problem is defined. Chapters that follow describe basic definitions for plate bending, deflection, slope and curvature. The following boundary condition is used in this article: rectangular plate is wedged on one side and simply supported on three sides. Using finite difference method, linear equation system is given and solved in Wolfram Mathematica. System of equations is built using the mapping function and solved with solve function. Solutions are given in the graphs. Such obtained solutions are compared to the finite element method solver NastranInCad.
This report discusses the application of the following methods that are used to calculate maximum frequency of a spectrum: parabolic, modified parabolic by Rife and Vincent, the method according to Quinn from 1994 and the method according to Quinn from 1997. After introducing DIRECT global minimization method, the results obtained using previously mentioned methods are compared with the results obtained using DIRECT global minimization of the Lipschitz function. Determining vibration frequency and comparing to previously collected data or knowledge base data is a common procedure. In engineering practice it is often necessary to determine not one, but several so-called dominant frequencies or local maxima; the procedure is sometimes called multi peak detection and here we propose an algorithm for computerised multi peak detection.
Drilling is a cutting process that uses a rotary cutting tool to cut a cylindrical hole in a solid material. During machining, drill bits are exposed to rapid wear at high temperature. Sometimes, due to an ecological need for dry technology without any lubricant, the use of drill bits with coatings is required, typically titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbon nitride (TiCN) or titanium aluminium nitride (TiAlN). This paper presents research on drilling done to determine how drill point geometry affects the drill lifetime and finished surface quality. We compared the chip removal ability and surface quality of bored holes in Hardox 500 created with high-speed steel drill bits and drill bits manufactured from hard metals, with and without coatings, under constant processing parameters. A cost/efficiency comparison was also carried out with respect to drill bit fabrication, sharpening, and use. Based on the data obtained on the damage drill points, the most economical drill bit for processing holes was determined.
