A generation ago, the word "stress" was reserved for adults. People think that childhood is a time when children are carefree, having no worries or responsibilities. But children also experience extreme stress, have similar symptoms as those of adults and have difficulty in handling stress.The purpose of this study was to study the prevalence and levels of stress during late childhood in relation to gender and educational standard. A total number of 192 children within the range of 6-11 years were selected randomly as sample for the study from eight different private schools from N.C. Hills district of Assam. An interview schedule was prepared to elicit background information, sources of stress and symptoms of stress exhibit by the children. The Interview schedule was constructed separately for the teachers and parents. The findings of the present study revealed that stress was prevalent during late childhood. But stress was more prevalent in the first and fifth grade compared to the other grades. Majority of the boys and girls were moderately stressed. HIND ARTS ACADEMY Received: 15.10.
Occupational stress is the interaction of the worker and the conditions of work. The study was conducted to identify the level of occupational stress of the Assistant Professors and equivalent rank at Assam Agricultural University. A total number of 50 respondents including Assistant professors, Subject Matter Specialist and Junior Scientists were selected randomly for the present study. A well developed and widely used tool known as occupational stress index (OSI) in the Indian context (Srivastava and Singh, 1984) was used to assess the occupational stress of the sample. The questionnaire consists of 46 statements. The items relate to almost all relevant components of the job life which cause stress in some way or the other. Total score on this scale is considered for the assessment of occupational stress. More the score on this scale indicates more stress. The findings of the present study revealed that (68%) of the respondents were highly stressed due to overload of work and 54 per cent of the respondents were moderately stressed due to the reason of under participation. Due to unreasonable group and political pressure 46 per cent of the respondents showed low level of stress.
: Stress is experience in many forms and varies by the individual. Today's s children are under a massive amount of stress and it is well documented that the heavy stress loads has negative effects on children. The study was conducted to identify various stressors, children's reaction to stress and to find out the inter-relationship between stressors and stress symptoms. A total number of 192 children studying in grade I to grade VI were selected randomly as sample for the study from eight different private schools of N.C. Hills district of Assam. A self constructed interview schedule was used to elicit background information, stressors and symptoms of stress exhibited by the children. The Interview schedule was constructed separately for the teachers and parents. School related information and family related information were collected from both the teachers and parents, respectively. The findings of the present study revealed that school related stressors such as overloaded assignments, project works, heavy class workloads and family related sources of stress like restrictions on recreational activities, watching television and confined at home even during holidays were identified to be the main stressors in children. Children's reactions to such stressors were expressed through various physiological, socio-emotional behavioural symptoms as well as changes in academic performances. It was also revealed that when the stressors increased the symptoms of stress also increased.
