Barbara Rogoff, da Universidade da Califórnia, é um nome de destaque na área da Psicologia Cultural. Trabalhou no Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition, com Michael Cole, James Wertsch, Sylvia Scribner, entre outros. Dentre os numerosos artigos e publicações ao longo dos últimos 20 anos, destacamos a obra Apprenticeship in Thinking, uma obra de referência na área da Psicologia Cultural. A Psicologia Cultural, nas suas diferentes vertentes, pretende responder ao renascimento do interesse pela natureza social do ser humano, a que se tem vindo a assistir nas últimas décadas. Este interesse, sendo recorrente ao longo da história das ciências humanas, continua a ser tratado segundo dois modelos arquétipos (Valsiner & van der Veer, 2000). No primeiro desses modelos, os cientistas mostram uma grande preocupação em demonstrar a "diluição" dos indivíduos nos contextos sociais. De acordo com este ponto de vista, as pessoas são sociais porque submetem a sua personalidade individual à necessidade de participar nas actividades de uma determinada unidade social. O segundo arquétipo, pelo contrário, apresenta as pessoas enquanto atraídas pelo mundo social, e por isso seguem as suas normas. Contudo, um terceiro modelo enfatiza simultaneamente a individualidade (uniqueness) e o relacionamento (relatedness) da pessoa com as unidades sociais, pretendendo ultrapassar a parcialidade dos dois modelos anteriores. Este modelo, inspirado no desenvolvimento das teses de Vygotsky, tem vindo a tornar-se o centro das atenções desde os anos noventa, sob a designação de Psicologia Cultural. É nesta abordagem que se situa o trabalho desenvolvido nos últimos 20 anos por Barbara Rogoff, com um enfoque particular na observação etnográfica das diferentes formas de participação guiada, em contextos de actividade social. O seu objectivo é pôr em evidência a complexidade da unidade entre as pessoas e os seus contextos sócio-culturais, recusando separá-los teoricamente. Aquando da sua participação no XI Colóquio Psicologia e Educação, realizado em Novembro de 2002, tivemos oportunidade de realizar uma longa entrevista com Barbara Rogoff, de que apresentamos seguidamente breves excertos, com o objectivo de clarificar os seus pontos de vista, no momento actual do seu trabalho.
