As a major marine pollution source, oil spills largely threaten the sustainability of the coastal environment. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar remote sensing has become a promising approach for marine oil spill detection since it could effectively separate crude oil and biogenic look-alikes. However, on the sea surface, the signal to noise ratio of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) backscatter is usually low, especially for cross-polarized channels. In practice, it is necessary to combine the refined detail of slick-sea boundary derived from the co-polarized channel and the highly accurate crude slick/look-alike classification result obtained based on the polarimetric information. In this paper, the architecture for oil spill detection based on polarimetric SAR is proposed and analyzed. The performance of different polarimetric SAR filters for oil spill classification are compared. Polarimetric SAR features are extracted and taken as the input of Staked Auto Encoder (SAE) to achieve high accurate classification between crude oil, biogenic slicks, and clean sea surface. A post-processing method is proposed to combine the classification result derived from SAE and the refined boundary derived from VV channel power image based on special density thresholding (SDT). Experiments were conducted on spaceborne fully polarimetric SAR images where both crude oil and biogenic slicks were presented on the sea surface.
Histogram equalization (HE) is a classic and widely used image contrast enhancement algorithm for its good performance and high efficiency. However, over‐enhancement caused by high peak in the histogram affects the subjective quality of the image processed by HE to a large extent. In this paper, a detail weighted histogram equalization (DWHE) method is proposed based on a novel histogram modification (HM) model named partial statistic and global mapping (PSGM) to alleviate high peak and suppress over‐enhancement. Moreover, the authors implement a refined version of gamma correction (GC) named texture enhancement function (TEF) on high‐frequency images to reduce the noise amplification effect. At last, the authors propose a novel adaptively weighted pixel‐level image fusion method to further reduce the phenomenon of over‐enhancement and improve brightness distribution. Both subjective and quantitative evaluations are conducted on images containing a variety of scenes. Compared with several state‐of‐the‐art image enhancement methods, the proposed framework obtained generally the best performance in aspects of both subjective appearance and objective evaluation indices. Therefore, it is proved that the proposed methods can effectively alleviate the over‐enhancement, enrich image details, and efficiently improve the visual quality while preserving the brightness of the image.
Background: Road network data are crucial in various applications, such as emergency response, urban planning, and transportation management. The recent application of deep neural networks has significantly boosted the efficiency and accuracy of road network extraction based on remote sensing data. However, most existing methods for road extraction were designed at local or regional scales. Automatic extraction of large-scale road datasets from satellite images remains challenging due to the complex background around the roads, especially the complicated land cover types. To tackle this issue, this paper proposes a land cover background-adaptive framework for large-scale road extraction. Method: A large number of sample image blocks (6820) are selected from six different countries of a wide region as the dataset. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is automatically converted to the ground truth of networks, and Esri 2020 Land Cover Dataset is taken as the background land cover information. A fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm is first applied to cluster the sample images according to the proportion of certain land use types that obviously negatively affect road extraction performance. Then, the specific model is trained on the images clustered as abundant with that certain land use type, while a general model is trained based on the rest of the images. Finally, the road extraction results obtained by those general and specific modes are combined. Results: The dataset selection and algorithm implementation were conducted on the cloud-based geoinformation platform Google Earth Engine (GEE) and Google Colaboratory. Experimental results showed that the proposed framework achieved stronger adaptivity on large-scale road extraction in both visual and statistical analysis. The C-means clustering algorithm applied in this study outperformed other hard clustering algorithms. Significance: The promising potential of the proposed background-adaptive network was demonstrated in the automatic extraction of large-scale road networks from satellite images as well as other object detection tasks. This search demonstrated a new paradigm for the study of large-scale remote sensing applications based on deep neural networks.
The brightness temperature (TB) features extracted from Chang’e-2 Lunar Microwave Sounder (CELMS) data represent the passive microwave thermal emission (MTE) from the lunar regolith at different depths. However, there have been few studies assessing the importance and contribution of each TB feature for mapping mare basalt units. In this study, a unified framework of TB features analysis is proposed through a case study of Mare Fecunditatis, which is a large basalt basin on the eastern nearside of the Moon. Firstly, TB maps are generated from original CELMS data. Next, all TB features are evaluated systematically using a range of analytical approaches. The Pearson coefficient is used to compute the correlation of features and basalt classes. Two distance metrics, normalized distance and J-S divergence, are selected to measure the discrimination of basalt units by each TB feature. Their contributions to basalt classification are quantitatively evaluated by the ReliefF method and out-of-bag (OOB) importance index. Then, principal component analysis (PCA) is applied to reduce the dimension of TB features and analyze the feature space. Finally, a new geological map of Mare Fecunditatis is generated using CELMS data based on a random forest (RF) classifier. The results will be of great significance in utilizing CELMS data more widely as an additional tool to study the geological structure of the lunar basalt basin.
