In this paper, a metamaterial absorber is designed, fabricated, and experimentally demonstrated to realize ultra-wideband absorption, which is composed of three layers of square resistive metasurfaces with different dimensions. Multilayer resistive metasurfaces can not only broaden the absorption bandwidth but also adjust the impedance matching based on multi-resonant modes. The total thickness of the proposed absorber is 3.8 mm, which is only 0.09λ at the lowest frequency. The bandwidth of absorptivity more than 90% is from 7.0 GHz to 37.4 GHz, and the relative absorption bandwidth is about 137%. The proposed absorber has good polarization-insensitiveness and wide incident angle stability. The measured results agree well with the theoretical design and the numerical simulations.
The present study aimed to evaluate the correlation of integrin α7 (ITGA7) with clinicopathological characteristics and overall survival (OS) in patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC), and to investigate the effect of ITGA7 knockdown on proliferation, apoptosis and stemness of TSCC cells in vitro. ITGA7 expression was measured in tumor tissues and paired adjacent normal tissues from 60 patients with TSCC using immunohistochemistry. ITGA7 expression in human TSCC cell lines and normal oral keratinocytes was measured using quantitative PCR and western blotting. Lentiviruses carrying short hairpin (sh) RNA targeting ITGA7 were used to knockdown its expression in CAL-27 and HSC-4 cells, and then proliferation, apoptosis and stemness were measured. In addition, CAL-27 and HSC-4 cancer stem cells (CSCs) were constructed and their ITGA7 expression was measured. The results demonstrated that ITGA7 was upregulated in the tumor tissues compared with the paired adjacent tissues, and its high expression was correlated with worse pathological grade, N stage, TNM stage and OS. In vitro, ITGA7 expression levels were demonstrated to be increased in the TSCC CAL-27, SCC-9, HSC-4 and SCC-25 cell lines compared to the normal HOK cell line. In CAL-27 and HSC-4 cells, ITGA7 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, promoted apoptosis, increased CD24 expression, decreased CD44 and CD133 expression, reduced drug resistance to cisplatin and attenuated sphere formation efficiency. Finally, ITGA7 expression levels were greatly elevated in CAL-27 and HSC-4 CSCs compared with parental CAL-27 and HSC-4 cells. In conclusion, ITGA7 knockdown inhibited tumor cell proliferation and stemness in TSCC cells. These findings indicated that ITGA7 might serve as a potential marker for CSCs and may correlate with worse clinical features and prognosis in TSCC.
Small ubiquitin-related modifiers (SUMO) represent a class of ubiquitin-like proteins that are conjugated, like ubiquitin, by a set of enzymes to form cellular regulatory proteins, and play key roles in the control of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. We found that ginkgolic acid (GA) can significantly reduce cell vitality in a dose-and time-dependent manner and can also accelerate cyto-apoptosis in both Tca8113 and Cal-27 cells. Migration and wound-healing assays were executed to determine the anti-migration effect of GA in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines. GA represses transforming growth factor-b1 (TGF-b1)-induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) markers in OSCC cell lines. This investigation is the first evidence that GA suppresses TGF-b1-induced SU-MOylation of SMAD4. We show that GA affects the phosphorylation of SMAD2/3 protein and the release of SMAD4. In the xenograft mouse model, the OSCC progression was reduced by GA, effectively suppressing the growth of tumors. In addition, siSMAD4 improved cell migration and viability, which was inhibited by GA in Tca8113 cells. GA suppresses tumorigenicity and tumor progression of OSCC through inhibition of TGF-b1-induced enhancement of SUMOylation of SMAD4. Thus, GA could be a promising therapeutic for OSCC.
A transparent metamaterial absorber with simultaneously high optical transparency and broadband microwave absorption is presented in this paper. Consisting of a two-layer soda-lime glass substrate and three-layer patch-shaped indium tin oxide (ITO) films, the proposed absorber has advantages of broadband absorption with an absorptivity higher than 85% in the range from 6.1 to 22.1 GHz, good polarization insensitiveness, a high transparency, a low profile, and wide-incident-angle stability. A prototype of the proposed absorber is fabricated and experimentally measured to demonstrate its excellent performance. The measured results agree well with the theoretical design and numerical simulations.
