A number of previous studies have examined music-related plasticity in terms of multi-sensory and motor integration but little is known about the functional and effective connectivity patterns of spontaneous intrinsic activity in these systems during the resting state in musicians. Using functional connectivity and Granger causal analysis, functional and effective connectivity among the motor and multi-sensory (visual, auditory and somatosensory) cortices were evaluated using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in musicians and non-musicians. The results revealed that functional connectivity was significantly increased in the motor and multi-sensory cortices of musicians. Moreover, the Granger causality results demonstrated a significant increase outflow-inflow degree in the auditory cortex with the strongest causal outflow pattern of effective connectivity being found in musicians. These resting state fMRI findings indicate enhanced functional integration among the lower-level perceptual and motor networks in musicians, and may reflect functional consolidation (plasticity) resulting from long-term musical training, involving both multi-sensory and motor functional integration.

Examining the spontaneous activity to understand the neural mechanism of brain disorder is a focus in recent resting-state fMRI. In the current study, to investigate the alteration of brain functional connectivity in partial epilepsy in a systematical way, two levels of analyses (functional connectivity analysis within resting state networks (RSNs) and functional network connectivity (FNC) analysis) were carried out on resting-state fMRI data acquired from the 30 participants including 14 healthy controls(HC) and 16 partial epilepsy patients. According to the etiology, all patients are subdivided into temporal lobe epilepsy group (TLE, included 7 patients) and mixed partial epilepsy group (MPE, 9 patients). Using group independent component analysis, eight RSNs were identified, and selected to evaluate functional connectivity and FNC between groups. Compared with the controls, decreased functional connectivity within all RSNs was found in both TLE and MPE. However, dissociating patterns were observed within the 8 RSNs between two patient groups, i.e, compared with TLE, we found decreased functional connectivity in 5 RSNs increased functional connectivity in 1 RSN, and no difference in the other 2 RSNs in MPE. Furthermore, the hierarchical disconnections of FNC was found in two patient groups, in which the intra-system connections were preserved for all three subsystems while the lost connections were confined to intersystem connections in patients with partial epilepsy. These findings may suggest that decreased resting state functional connectivity and disconnection of FNC are two remarkable characteristics of partial epilepsy. The selective impairment of FNC implicated that it is unsuitable to understand the partial epilepsy only from global or local perspective. We presumed that studying epilepsy in the multi-perspective based on RSNs may be a valuable means to assess the functional changes corresponding to specific RSN and may contribute to the understanding of the neuro-pathophysiological mechanism of epilepsy.

Five-session rTMS treatment could best improve stroke-induced upper limb dyskinesia acutely and in a long-lasting manner. Intermittent theta burst stimulation is more beneficial than continuous theta burst stimulation. rTMS applied in the acute phase of stroke is more effective than rTMS applied in the chronic phase. Subcortical lesion benefit more from rTMS than other lesion site.

Physicochemical properties constitute a key factor for the success of a drug candidate. Whereas many strategies to improve the physicochemical properties of small heterocycle-type leads exist, complex hydrocarbon skeletons are more challenging to derivatize due to the absence of functional groups. A variety of C–H oxidation methods have been explored on the betulin skeleton to improve the solubility of this very bioactive, yet poorly water soluble, natural product. Capitalizing on the innate reactivity of the molecule, as well as the few molecular handles present on the core, allowed for oxidations at different positions across the pentacyclic structure. Enzymatic oxidations afforded several orthogonal oxidations to chemical methods. Solubility measurements showed an enhancement for many of the synthesized compounds.

This meta-analysis supports that high frequency rTMS stimulation on right- or bilateral-DLPFC has significant therapeutic effect on cognitive function in patients with mild to moderate AD. Due to small number of studies included, more well-controlled rTMS studies should be evaluated in AD patients in the future.

This meta-analysis indicates that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation has a positive effect on dysphagia after stroke. Compared with low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation may be more beneficial to the patients. This meta-analysis also supports that repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on an unaffected - or bilateral - hemisphere has a significant therapeutic effect on dysphagia.

The fabrication of mechanically robust polymeric materials capable of self-healing and recycling remains challenging because the mobility of polymer chains in such polymers is very limited. In this work, mechanically robust supramolecular thermosets capable of healing physical damages and recycling under mild conditions are fabricated by trimerization of bi-(ortho-aminomethyl-phenylboronic acid)-and tri-(ortho-aminomethyl-phenylboronic acid)-terminated poly(propylene glycol) oligomers (denoted as Bi-PBA-PPG and Tri-PBA-PPG, respectively). The resultant supramolecular thermosets are cross-linked by dynamic covalent bonds of nitrogen-coordinated boroxines. The mechanical properties of the supramolecular thermosets can be systematically tailored by varying the ratios between Tri-PBA-PPG and Bi-PBA-PPG, which changes the cross-linking density of nitrogencoordinated boroxines and the topology of the supramolecular thermosets. The mechanically strongest supramolecular thermosets with a molar ratio of Tri-PBA-PPG to Bi-PBA-PPG being 1:2 have a glass transition temperature of ∼36 °C, a tensile strength of ∼31.96 MPa, and a Young's modulus of ∼298.5 MPa. The high reversibility of nitrogen-coordinated boroxines and the flexibility of poly(propylene glycol) chains enable the supramolecular thermosets with the strongest mechanical strength to be highly efficiently healed at 55 °C and recycled under a pressure of 4 MPa at 60 °C to regain their original mechanical strength and integrity.

IntroductionTherapeutic effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on motor recovery of Parkinson's disease (PD) have been reported; however, the protocols of these studies varied greatly. The aim of this meta‐analysis was to evaluate the optimal rTMS parameters for motor recovery of PD.MethodsElectronic databases were searched for studies investigating the therapeutic effects of rTMS on motor function in patients with PD. The section III of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) was extracted as the primary outcome, and the standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated.ResultsTwenty‐three studies with a total of 646 participants were included. The pooled estimates of rTMS revealed significant short‐term (SMD, 0.37; p < 0.00001) and long‐term (SMD, 0.39; p = 0.005) effects on motor function improvement of PD. Subgroup analysis observed that high‐frequency rTMS (HF‐rTMS) was significant in improving motor function (SMD, 0.48; p < 0.00001), but low‐frequency rTMS (LF‐rTMS) was not. In particular, when HF‐rTMS targeted over the primary motor cortex (M1), in which the bilateral M1 revealed a larger effect size than unilateral M1. Compared to single‐session, multi‐session of HF‐rTMS over the M1 showed significant effect size. In addition, HF‐rTMS over the M1 with a total of 18,000–20,000 stimulation pulses yielded more significant effects (SMD, 0.97; p = 0.01) than other dosages.ConclusionsIn conclusion, multi‐session of HF‐rTMS over the M1 (especially bilateral M1) with a total of 18,000–20,000 pulses appears to be the optimal parameters for motor improvement of PD.
