Objectives To systematically analyze CT findings during the early and progressive stages of natural course of coronavirus disease 2019 and also to explore possible changes in pulmonary parenchymal abnormalities during these two stages. Methods We retrospectively reviewed the initial chest CT data of 62 confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 patients (34 men, 28 women; age range 20-91 years old) who did not receive any antiviral treatment between January 21 and February 4, 2020, in Chongqing, China. Patients were assigned to the early-stage group (onset of symptoms within 4 days) or progressive-stage group (onset of symptoms within 4-7 days) for analysis. CT characteristics and the distribution, size, and CT score of pulmonary parenchymal abnormalities were assessed. Results In our study, the major characteristic of coronavirus disease 2019 was ground-glass opacity (61.3%), followed by ground-glass opacity with consolidation (35.5%), rounded opacities (25.8%), a crazy-paving pattern (25.8%), and an air bronchogram (22.6%). No patient presented cavitation, a reticular pattern, or bronchial wall thickening. The CT scores of the progressive-stage group were significantly greater than those of the early-stage group (p = 0.004). Conclusions Multiple ground-glass opacities with consolidations in the periphery of the lungs were the primary CT characteristic of coronavirus disease 2019. CT score can be used to evaluate the severity of the disease. If these typical alterations are found, then the differential diagnosis of coronavirus disease 2019 must be considered. Key Points • Multiple GGOs with consolidations in the periphery of the lungs were the primary CT characteristic of COVID-19.• The halo sign may be a special CT feature in the early-stage COVID-19 patients.• Significantly increased CT score may indicate the aggravation of COVID-19 in the progressive stage.

Dual‐ion batteries (DIBs) have attracted increasing attention owing to their merits of high working voltage, low cost, and especially environmental friendliness. However, the cycling stability of most DIBs is still unsatisfying due to the decomposition of conventional liquid carbonate electrolytes under high working voltages. Exploration of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with good electrochemical stability at high voltage is a possible strategy to optimize their cycling stability. A high‐performance flexible DIB based on a poly(vinylidene fluoride‐hexafluoro propylene) GPE codoped with poly(ethylene oxide) and graphene oxide via weak bond interactions is herein reported for the first time. The prepared polymer electrolyte shows a 3D porous network with significantly improved ionic conductivity up to 2.1 × 10−3 S cm−1, which is favorable for fast ionic transportation of both cations and anions. As a result, this DIB exhibits excellent cycling stability with a capacity retention of 92% after 2000 cycles at a high current rate of 5C (1C is corresponding to 100 mA g−1), which is among the best performances of DIBs. Moreover, good flexibility and thermal stability (up to 90 °C) are also achieved for this battery, indicating its potential applications for high‐performance flexible energy storage devices.

Colorization of grayscale images is a hot topic in computer vision. Previous research mainly focuses on producing a color image to recover the original one in a supervised learning fashion. However, since many colors share the same gray value, an input grayscale image could be diversely colorized while maintaining its reality. In this paper, we design a novel solution for unsupervised diverse colorization. Specifically, we leverage conditional generative adversarial networks to model the distribution of real-world item colors, in which we develop a fully convolutional generator with multi-layer noise to enhance diversity, with multi-layer condition concatenation to maintain reality, and with stride 1 to keep spatial information. With such a novel network architecture, the model yields highly competitive performance on the open LSUN bedroom dataset. The Turing test on 80 humans further indicates our generated color schemes are highly convincible.

Dual‐ion batteries (DIBs) have attracted much attention owing to their low cost, high voltage, and environmental friendliness. As the source of active ions during the charging/discharging process, the electrolyte plays a critical role in the performance of DIBs, including capacity, energy density, and cycling life. However, most used electrolyte systems based on the LiPF6 salt demonstrate unsatisfactory performance in DIBs. We have successfully developed a 7.5 mol kg−1 lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in a carbonate electrolyte system. Compared with diluted electrolytes, this highly concentrated electrolyte exhibits several advantages: 1) enhanced intercalation capacity and cycling stability of the graphite cathode, 2) optimized structural stability of the Al anode, and 3) significantly increased battery energy density. A proof‐of‐concept DIB based on this concentrated electrolyte exhibits a discharge capacity of 94.0 mAh g−1 at 200 mA g−1 and 96.8 % capacity retention after 500 cycles. By counting both the electrode materials and electrolyte, the energy density of this DIB reaches up to ≈180 Wh kg−1, which is among the best performances of DIBs reported to date.

Background:Smoking is a risk factor for many human diseases. DNA methylation has been related to smoking, but genome-wide methylation data for smoking in Chinese populations is limited.Objectives:We aimed to investigate epigenome-wide methylation in relation to smoking in a Chinese population.Methods:We measured the methylation levels at > 485,000 CpG sites (CpGs) in DNA from leukocytes using a methylation array and conducted a genome-wide meta-analysis of DNA methylation and smoking in a total of 596 Chinese participants. We further evaluated the associations of smoking-related CpGs with internal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) biomarkers and their correlations with the expression of corresponding genes.Results:We identified 318 CpGs whose methylation levels were associated with smoking at a genome-wide significance level (false discovery rate < 0.05), among which 161 CpGs annotated to 123 genes were not associated with smoking in recent studies of Europeans and African Americans. Of these smoking-related CpGs, methylation levels at 80 CpGs showed significant correlations with the expression of corresponding genes (including RUNX3, IL6R, PTAFR, ANKRD11, CEP135 and CDH23), and methylation at 15 CpGs was significantly associated with urinary 2-hydroxynaphthalene, the most representative internal monohydroxy-PAH biomarker for smoking.Conclusion:We identified DNA methylation markers associated with smoking in a Chinese population, including some markers that were also correlated with gene expression.
