B-cell translocation gene 2 (BTG2), the first gene identified in the BTG/TOB gene family, is involved in many biological activities in cancer cells acting as a tumor suppressor. The BTG2 expression is downregulated in many human cancers. It is an instantaneous early response gene and plays important roles in cell differentiation, proliferation, DNA damage repair, and apoptosis in cancer cells. Moreover, BTG2 is regulated by many factors involving different signal pathways. However, the regulatory mechanism of BTG2 is largely unknown. Recently, the relationship between microRNAs and BTG2 has attracted much attention. MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) has been found to regulate BTG2 gene during carcinogenesis. In this review, we summarize the latest findings in the investigations of biological functions of BTG2 and regulation of its expression, with an emphasis on miR-21 in regulation of BTG2 gene in various cancers. B-cell translocation gene 2 (BTG2), also known as PC3 or TIS21, belongs to the antiproliferative (APRO) gene family. Several studies have demonstrated that BTG2 is involved in a large number of physiological and pathological processes, such as cell differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and other cellular functions, acting as a tumor suppressor. In this review, we summarize the latest findings in BTG2 studies, highlighting the mechanisms for the regulatory effects of microRNAs (miRNAs) on BTG2 gene expression in the most common human cancers.

Our findings suggest a previously undescribed regulatory pathway in which the miR-224/HOXD10/p-PAK4/MMP-9 signaling pathway contributes to the regulation of cell migration and invasion and provides a new biotarget for HCC treatment.

This study showed that in central south Chinese postmenopausal women, serum sclerostin is lower in women with osteoporosis than without. Serum sclerostin is positively correlated with fat mass and BMD for the whole body, lumbar spine and hip.

Rationale:We reviewed 76 published cases of Doege–Potter syndrome, and non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) secondary to a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) between 1989 and 2016, to study disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of this rare paraneoplastic disease. Further, we report 1 new case of a patient presenting with Doege–Potter syndrome.Patients concerns:The tumors originated from the pleural cavity, lung, pelvis, liver, retroperitoneum, kidney, mediastinal, the sella, uterus, bladder, intestine, mandibular, and the thigh. The most common location was the pleural cavity (left 12 cases and right 28 cases). Moreover, 28/71 (39.4%) were benign and 43/71 (60.6%) were malignant. SFTs with NICTH were more likely to be malignant and present at a higher rate than previously published (5%–10.4%). The malignancy rate of extrathoracic SFTs was higher than that of thoracic SFTs, 20 (66.7%) as compared with 23 (56.1%). Age of onset varied from 24 to 85 years (mean 59 years), with 47 males and 28 females, and gender unavailable for 1 case. When comparing clinical characteristics of patients with benign as compared malignant tumors, no significant differences in the age of onset, gender, or size of tumor were seen. Among 15/19 cases, the insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II)/IGF-I ration was >10.0. Complete tumor resection remained the only definitive treatment.Outcomes and lessens:Glucocorticoids dose-dependently reduce the frequency and severity of hypoglycemic episodes. Low doses of prednisone were ineffective at relieving hypoglycemia. The effect of neoadjuvant treatment, consisting of chemoradiation, and consecutive selective embolization of vessels feeding the tumor were not identified.

BackgroundCentral nervous system (CNS) brain metastasis of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients confers a worse quality of life and prognosis. The efficacy comparison of two first-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors erlotinib or gefitinib as first-line treatment for CNS metastasis NSCLC patients with EGFR-sensitizing mutations is yet to be elucidated.MethodsA retrospective analysis was done on cerebral metastasis rate after erlotinib or gefitinib as first-line treatment for advanced NSCLC patients with EGFR-sensitizing mutations. Time to neurological progression (nTTP) and median progression-free survival (mPFS) were calculated.ResultsThe study involved 279 patients (erlotinib group: 108, gefitinib group: 171). After a median follow-up of 22 months, 27 patients (25%) in the erlotinib group and 60 patients (35.1%) in the gefitinib group showed CNS progression. The HR of CNS progression for erlotinib versus gefitinib was 0.695 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.406–1.190], suggesting a risk reduction of 30.5% although not achieving statistical significance. The 6-, 12- and 18-month cumulative CNS progression rates were 0.9, 3.7 and 12% for erlotinib compared with corresponding rates of 5.8, 9.4 and 17% for gefitinib (P = 0.181). However, for those patients with preexisting brain metastases prior to EGFR-TKI treatment, erlotinib as first line treatment significantly extended the median nTTP in comparison to gefitinib (30 months vs 15.8 months, p = 0.024).ConclusionsOur data show that nTTP can be effectively extended in preexisting brain metastases patients with EGFR-sensitizing mutations initially treated with erlotinib compared with gefitinib.
