.[1] Based on 1-2 years of continuous observations of seismic ambient noise data obtained at more than 600 stations in and around Tibet, Rayleigh wave phase velocity maps are constructed from 10 s to 60 s period. A 3-D Vsv model of the crust and uppermost mantle is derived from these maps. The 3-D model exhibits significant apparently inter-connected low shear velocity features across most of the Tibetan middle crust at depths between 20 and 40 km. These low velocity zones (LVZs) do not conform to surface faults and, significantly, are most prominent near the periphery of Tibet. The observations support the internal deformation model in which strain is dispersed in the deeper crust into broad ductile shear zones, rather than being localized horizontally near the edges of rigid blocks. The prominent LVZs are coincident with strong mid-crustal radial anisotropy in western and central Tibet and probably result at least partially from anisotropic minerals aligned by deformation, which mitigates the need to invoke partial melt to explain the observations. Irrespective of their cause in partial melt or mineral alignment, mid-crustal LVZs reflect deformation and their amplification near the periphery of Tibet provides new information about the mode of deformation across Tibet.
A 3‐D shear velocity model of the crust and uppermost mantle to a depth of 100 km is presented beneath the North China Craton (NCC), northeastern China, the Korean Peninsula, and the Sea of Japan. Ambient noise Rayleigh wave tomography is applied to data from more than 300 broadband seismic stations from Chinese provincial networks (CEArray), the Japanese F‐Net, and the IRIS Global Seismic Network. Continuous data from 2007 to 2009 are used to produce group and phase velocity maps from 8 s to 45 s periods. The model is motivated to constrain the distributed intraplate volcanism, crustal extension, cratonic rejuvenation, and lithospheric thinning that are hypothesized for the study region. Numerous robust features are observed that impose new constraints on the geometry of these processes, but discussion concentrates only on four. (1) The North‐South Gravity Lineament follows the ∼40 km contour in crustal thickness, and crustal thickness is anticorrelated with water depth beneath the Sea of Japan, consistent with crustal isostasy for a crust with laterally variable composition. (2) The lithosphere is thin (∼70 km) beneath the Songliao‐Bohai Graben but seismically fast. (3) Even thinner more attenuated lithosphere bounds three sides of the eastern NCC (in a horseshoe shape), identifying a region of particularly intense tectonothermal modification where lithospheric rejuvenation may have reached nearly to the base of the crust. (4) Low‐velocity anomalies reach upward (in a Y shape) in the mantle beneath the eastern and western borders of the Sea of Japan, extending well into continental East Asia in the west, and are separated by a ∼60 km thick lithosphere beneath the central Sea of Japan. This anomaly may reflect relatively shallow slab dehydration in the east and in the west may reflect deeper dehydration and convective circulation in the mantle wedge overlying the stagnant slab.
This study was conducted to determine effect and mechanism of exogenous silicon (Si) on salt and drought tolerance of Glycyrrhiza uralensis seedling by focusing on the pathways of antioxidant defense and osmotic adjustment. Seedling growth, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant metabolism, osmolytes concentration and Si content of G. uralensis seedlings were analyzed under control, salt and drought stress [100 mM NaCl with 0, 10 and 20% of PEG-6000 (Polyethylene glycol-6000)] with or without 1 mM Si. Si addition markedly affected the G. uralensis growth in a combined dose of NaCl and PEG dependent manner. In brief, Si addition improved germination rate, germination index, seedling vitality index and biomass under control and NaCl; Si also increased radicle length under control, NaCl and NaCl-10% PEG, decreased radicle length, seedling vitality index and germination parameters under NaCl-20% PEG. The salt and drought stress-induced-oxidative stress was modulated by Si application. Generally, Si application increased catalase (CAT) activity under control and NaCl-10% PEG, ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity under all treatments and glutathione (GSH) content under salt combined drought stress as compared with non-Si treatments, which resisted to the increase of superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide caused by salt and drought stress and further decreased membrane permeability and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration. Si application also increased proline concentration under NaCl and NaCl-20% PEG, but decreased it under NaCl-10% PEG, indicating proline play an important role in G. uralensis seedling response to osmotic stress. In conclusion, Si could ameliorate adverse effects of salt and drought stress on G. uralensis likely by reducing oxidative stress and osmotic stress, and the oxidative stress was regulated through enhancing of antioxidants (mainly CAT, APX and GSH) and osmotic stress was regulated by proline.
For analyzing possible reasons for the heavy damage and seismogenic features of the 24 August 2016 Norcia earthquake, we constructed and analyzed its rupture process by incorporating data sets of near‐field strong‐motion, teleseismic and static GPS displacements. The optimized model revealed a relatively compact slip pattern with mainly normal fault components. The maximum slip was around 0.9 m, while the rupture areas extended ~11 km and ~20 km along dip and strike, respectively. The total seismic moment was 2.3 × 1018 Nm, equivalent to Mw 6.2. Most seismic moments were released within 10 s, radiating 3.5 × 1013 J of seismic energy. The rupture history showed asymmetric propagation and is characterized by a relatively high rupture velocity within the first 6 s with a maximum of ~3.2 km/s. The main shock slip pattern correlated well with the aftershocks distribution, and most of the accumulated strain was released in the east of seismic gap between the nearby 1997 and 2009 earthquake sequences.
Anchorage, Alaska, was strongly shaken on 30 November 2018 by an MW 7.1 earthquake that ruptured within the underthrust Pacific plate at depths of from 45 to 65 km. Ground failures occurred in saturated lowlands filled with sediments, producing notable road damage, but there was limited structural damage in Anchorage, only ~12 km south of the epicenter. The earthquake has a normal faulting geometry with a shallowly dipping east‐west tension axis indicating intraslab deformation, likely between the underthrust Yakutat terrane and adjacent Pacific seafloor. Separate and joint inversions of teleseismic P and SH waves, regional strong ground motions, and GPS static displacements provide a weak preference for a westward steeply dipping rupture plane with up to 2 m of slip distributed over a single slip patch with dimensions of 20 × 20 km. The ~12 s long rupture expanded northward. Aftershocks occur at shallower depths than the mainshock slip zone.
Examining the relative contribution of local environmental stressors and regional factors in structuring biological communities is essential for biodiversity conservation and environmental assessment, yet their relative roles for different community facets remain elusive. Here, we examined the responses of taxonomic and functional structure of stream macroinvertebrate communities to local and regional factors across a human-induced environmental gradient in the Han River Basin, one subtropical biodiversity hotspot in China. Our objectives were: 1) to examine if functional traits were as effective as traditional taxonomic measures in differentiating anthropogenic disturbances; 2) to compare the relative importance of environmental versus spatial variables and catchment-scale versus reach-scale variables for the two community facets. We found that both species and trait compositions performed well in differentiating anthropogenic disturbances, indicating that both taxonomic and functional structures of macroinvertebrate communities were altered by human activities. Particularly, traits including voltinism, development, adult life duration, dispersal ability, respiration, body size, rheophily, habit and trophic groups appeared to be 1.
