Quasielastic neutron scattering experiments and molecular dynamics ͑MD͒ simulations have been used to investigate molecular diffusive motion near the melting transition of monolayers of flexible rod-shaped molecules. The experiments were conducted on butane and hexane monolayers adsorbed on an exfoliated graphite substrate. For butane, quasielastic scattering broader than the experimental energy resolution width of 70 eV appears abruptly at the monolayer melting point of T m ϭ116 K, whereas, for the hexane monolayer, it appears 20 K below the melting transition (T m ϭ170 K). To facilitate comparison with experiment, quasielastic spectra calculated from the MD simulations were analyzed using the same models and fitting algorithms as for the neutron spectra. This combination of techniques gives a microscopic picture of the melting process in these two monolayers which is consistent with earlier neutron diffraction experiments. Butane melts abruptly to a liquid phase where the molecules in the trans conformation translationally diffuse while rotating about their center of mass. In the case of the hexane monolayer, the MD simulations show that the appearance of quasielastic scattering below T m coincides with transformation of some molecules from trans to gauche conformations. Furthermore, if gauche molecules are prevented from forming in the simulation, the calculated incoherent scattering function contains no quasielastic component below T m . Modeling of both the neutron and simulated hexane monolayer spectra below T m favors a plastic phase in which there is nearly isotropic rotational diffusion of the gauche molecules about their center of mass, but no translational diffusion. The elastic scattering observed above T m is consistent with the coexistence of solid monolayer clusters with a fluid phase, as predicted by the simulations. For T/T m у1.3, the elastic scattering vanishes from the neutron spectra where the simulation indicates the presence of a fluid phase alone. The qualitative similarities between the observed and simulated quasielastic spectra lend support to a previously proposed ''footprint reduction'' mechanism of melting in monolayers of flexible, rod-shaped molecules. © 1997 American Institute of Physics. ͓S0021-9606͑97͒50237-6͔

The nucleophilic substitution of N2 in benzenediazonium ion 1 by one H2O molecule to form protonated phenol 2 has been studied with ab initio (RHF, MP2, QCISD(T)//MP2) and hybrid density functional (B3LYP) methods. Three mechanisms were considered: (a) the unimolecular process SN1Ar with steps 1 --> Ph+ + N2 and Ph+ + H2O --> 2, (b) the bimolecular process SN2Ar with precoordination 1 + H2O --> 1 x H2O, SN reaction 1 x H2O --> [TS]++ --> 2 x N2 and dissociation of the postcoordination complex 2 x N2 --> 2 + N2, and (c) the direct bimolecular process SN2Ar that bypasses precoordination and involves just the SN reaction 1 + H2O --> [TS]++ --> 2 + N2. The SN2Ar reactions proceed by way of a Cs symmetric SN2Ar transition state structure that is rather loose, contains essentially a phenyl cation weakly bound to N2 and OH2, and is analogous to the transition state structures of front-side nucleophilic replacement at saturated centers. In solvolysis reactions, all of these processes follow first-order kinetics, and the electronic relaxation is essentially the same. It is argued that "unimolecular dediazoniations" have to proceed by way of SN2Ar transition state structures because strict SN1Ar reactions cannot be realized in solvolyses, despite the fact that the Gibbs free energy profile favors the strict SN1Ar process over the SN2Ar reaction by 6.7 kcal/mol. It is further argued that the direct SN2Ar process is the best model for the solvolysis reaction for dynamic reasons, and its Gibbs free energy of activation is 19.3 kcal/mol and remains higher than the SN1Ar value. Even though the SN1Ar and SN2Ar models provide activation enthalpies and SKIE values that closely match the experimental data, the analysis leads us to the unavoidable conclusion that this agreement is fortuitous. While the experiments do show that the solvent effect on the activation energy is about the same for all solvents, they do not show the absence of a solvent effect. The ab initio results presented here suggest that the solvent effect on the direct SN2Ar dediazoniation is approximately 12 kcal/mol, and computation of solvent effects with the isodensity polarized continuum model (IPCM) support this conclusion.

As the basis for the static security of the power grid, power load forecasting directly affects the safety of grid operation, the rationality of grid planning, and the economy of supply-demand balance. However, various factors lead to drastic changes in short-term power consumption, making the data more complex and thus more difficult to forecast. In response to this problem, a new hybrid model based on Variational mode decomposition (VMD) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) with seasonal factors elimination and error correction is proposed in this paper. Comprehensive case studies on four real-world load datasets from Singapore and the United States are employed to demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed hybrid model. The experimental results show that the prediction accuracy of the proposed model is significantly higher than that of the contrast models.

5-Cyanoimino-4-oxomethylene-4,5-dihydroimidazoles (1) (R at N1) have been discussed as possible intermediates in nitrosative guanine deamination, which are formed by dediazoniation and deprotonation of guaninediazonium ion. The parent system 1 (R = H) and its N1 derivatives 2 (R = Me) and 3 (R = MOM) are considered here. Protonation of 1-3, respectively, may occur either at the cyano-N to form cations 4 (R = H), 6 (R = Me), and 8 (R = MOM) or at the imino-N to form cations 5 (R = H), 7 (R = Me), and 9 (R = MOM), respectively. This protonation is the first step in the acid-catalyzed water addition to form 5-cyanoimino-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid, which then leads to oxanosine. There also exists the option of a substitution reaction by water at the R group of 6-9, and this dealkylation forms N-[4-(oxomethylene)-imidazol-5-yl]carbodiimide (10) and N-[4-(oxomethylene)-imidazol-5-yl]cyanamide (11). In the case of DNA, the R group is a deoxyribose sugar, and attack by water leads to deglycation. To explore this reaction option, the S(N)1 and S(N)2 reactions of 6-9 with water were studied at the MP2/6-31G*//RHF/6-31G* and CCSD/6-31G*//RHF/6-31G* levels, with the inclusion of implicit solvation at the IPCM(MP2/6-31G*)//RHF/6-31G* level, and the electron density distributions of tautomers 1, 10, and 11 were analyzed. The low barriers determined for the MOM transfer show that the deglycation could occur at room temperature but that the process cannot compete with water addition.
