Oxidization of carbon nanotubes by a mixed acid has been utilized as a standard method to functionalize carbon nanomaterials for years. Here, the products obtained from carbon nanotubes and graphite after a mixed-acid treatment are carefully studied. Nearly identical carbon dot (Cdot) products with diameters of 3-4 nm are produced using this approach from a variety of carbon starting materials, including single-walled carbon nanotubes, multiwalled carbon nanotubes, and graphite. These Cdots exhibit strong yellow fluorescence under UV irradiation and shifted emission peaks as the excitation wavelength is changed. In vivo fluorescence imaging with Cdots is then demonstrated in mouse experiments, by using varied excitation wavelengths including some in the near-infrared (NIR) region. Furthermore, in vivo biodistribution and toxicology of those Cdots in mice over different periods of time are studied; no noticeable signs of toxicity for Cdots to the treated animals are discovered. This work provides a facile method to synthesize Cdots as safe non-heavy-metal-containing fluorescent nanoprobes, promising for applications in biomedical imaging.

We study the electronic structures and topological properties of (M + N )-layer twisted graphene systems. We consider the generic situation that N -layer graphene is placed on top of the other M -layer graphene, and is twisted with respect to each other by an angle θ. In such twisted multilayer graphene (TMG) systems, we find that there exists two low-energy flat bands for each valley emerging from the interface between the M layers and the N layers. These two low-energy bands in the TMG system possess valley Chern numbers that are dependent on both the number of layers and the stacking chiralities. In particular, when the stacking chiralities of the M layers and N layers are opposite, the total Chern number of the two low-energy bands for each valley equals to ±(M + N − 2) (per spin). If the stacking chiralities of the M layers and the N layers are the same, then the total Chern number of the two low-energy bands for each valley is ±(M − N ) (per spin). The valley Chern numbers of the low-energy bands are associated with large, valley-contrasting orbital magnetizations, suggesting the possible existence of orbital ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect once the valley degeneracy is lifted either externally by a weak magnetic field or internally by Coulomb interaction through spontaneous symmetry breaking. arXiv:1903.10419v2 [cond-mat.mes-hall]

Kitaev interactions underlying a quantum spin liquid have long been sought, but experimental data from which their strengths can be determined directly, are still lacking. Here, by carrying out inelastic neutron scattering measurements on high-quality single crystals of α-RuCl_{3}, we observe spin-wave spectra with a gap of ∼2  meV around the M point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone. We derive an effective-spin model in the strong-coupling limit based on energy bands obtained from first-principles calculations, and find that the anisotropic Kitaev interaction K term and the isotropic antiferromagnetic off-diagonal exchange interaction Γ term are significantly larger than the Heisenberg exchange coupling J term. Our experimental data can be well fit using an effective-spin model with K=-6.8  meV and Γ=9.5  meV. These results demonstrate explicitly that Kitaev physics is realized in real materials.

We report on comprehensive results identifying the ground state of a triangular-lattice structured YbZnGaO_{4} as a spin glass, including no long-range magnetic order, prominent broad excitation continua, and the absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. More crucially, from the ultralow-temperature ac susceptibility measurements, we unambiguously observe frequency-dependent peaks around 0.1 K, indicating the spin-glass ground state. We suggest this conclusion holds also for its sister compound YbMgGaO_{4}, which is confirmed by the observation of spin freezing at low temperatures. We consider disorder and frustration to be the main driving force for the spin-glass phase.

Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realisation of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu3TeO6 with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dirac–Weyl framework. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed topological magnon band structure can be well described by the linear-spin-wave theory based on a Hamiltonian dominated by the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction J1. As such, we showcase Cu3TeO6 as an example system where Dirac and triply degenerate magnonic nodal excitations coexist, demonstrate an exotic topological state of matter, and provide a fresh ground to explore the topological properties in quantum materials.

An electrolyte using 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenyl methanesulfonate (PFPMS) as a versatile additive is investigated through calculating the molecular orbital energies of additives and solvents and designing the electrolyte composition, and the comparative performances of LiNiCoMnO/graphite cells operating in a wide-temperature range are improved. It is revealed that PFPMS can form interfacial films on both the cathode and anode surfaces, resulting in a decrease of the cell impedance and the side reactions between the active materials and electrolyte. Compared to the cells without additive of 74.9% and those with vinylene carbonate (VC) of 76.7%, the cycling retention of the cell with 1.0 wt % PFPMS reaches 91.7% after 400 cycles at room temperature. In particular, for the high-temperature storage at 60 °C for 7 d, the cell containing 1.0 wt % PFPMS exhibits optimal capacity retention of 86.3% and capacity recovery of 90.6%; for the low-temperature discharge capacity retention at -20 °C, the cell with 1.0 wt % PFPMS maintains at 66.3% at 0.5 C, while for the cells without additive and containing 1.0 wt % VC, their retention values are 55.0 and 62.1%, respectively. The excellent cycling, wide-temperature practicability, and rate capability of the cells with PFPMS demonstrate that the electrolyte with PFPMS additive is promising for applications in LiNiCoMnO/graphite batteries.
