In this study, the effect of CaO and BaO substitution on the viscosity and structure of CaO‐BaO‐SiO2‐MgO‐Al2O3 slags was investigated. The results showed that the viscosity increased with an increase in the BaO substitution concentration, which was correlated to an increase in the degree of polymerization (DOP) of the slag structural units as the activation energy increased from 207.9 to 263.8 kJ/mol for viscous flow. Deconvolution and area integration of the Raman spectrum of the slag revealed that the ratio of Q3/Q2 (Qi, i is the number of O0 in a [SiO4]‐tetrahedral unit) increased and NBO/Si (nonbridging oxygen per unit silicon atom) decreased with higher BaO content. It was also observed from the 27Al magic angles pinning nuclear magnetic resonance (27Al MAS‐NMR) spectrum that the relative proportion of AlIV increased, while that of AlV decreased because of the decrease in the percentage of nonbridging oxygen (O−), indicating the polymerization of the slag. O1s X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was also carried out to semi‐quantitatively analyze the various types of oxygen anions present in the slag. The XPS results correlated well with the results obtained from the analysis of the Raman and 27Al MAS‐NMR spectra of the slags and its viscous behavior.

Euphorbiaceae plants are important as suppliers of biodiesel. In the current study, the codon usage patterns and sources of variance in chloroplast genome sequences of six different Euphorbiaceae plant species have been systematically analyzed. Our results revealed that the chloroplast genomes of six Euphorbiaceae plant species were biased towards A/T bases and A/T-ending codons, followed by detection of 17 identical high-frequency codons including GCT, TGT, GAT, GAA, TTT, GGA, CAT, AAA, TTA, AAT, CCT, CAA, AGA, TCT, ACT, TAT and TAA. It was found that mutation pressure was a minor factor affecting the variation of codon usage, however, natural selection played a significant role. Comparative analysis of codon usage frequencies of six Euphorbiaceae plant species with four model organisms reflected that Arabidopsis thaliana, Populus trichocarpa, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae should be considered as suitable exogenous expression receptor systems for chloroplast genes of six Euphorbiaceae plant species. Furthermore, it is optimal to choose Saccharomyces cerevisiae as the exogenous expression receptor. The outcome of the present study might provide important reference information for further understanding the codon usage patterns of chloroplast genomes in other plant species.

Tan is a local fat-tail sheep that is famous for its great eating quality but with little attention to its meat metabolome. The aim of this study was to investigate Tan-lamb meat metabolome as well as the key rumen bacteria related to the beneficial compound deposition in the muscle using untargeted and targeted metabolomics under different feeding regimes: indoor feeding (F), artificial pasture grazing with indoor feeding (GF), and pure artificial pasture grazing (G). The untargeted metabolome was detected by ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Ruminal bacterial communities were detected by 16S rRNA sequencing. Using untargeted metabolomics, the main three altered metabolic pathways in the lamb, including amino acid, lipid, and nucleotide metabolisms, were found in the G group compared to the GF and F groups. Increased N-acetyl-L-aspartic acid, N-acetylaspartylglutamate, acetylcarnitine, and L-carnitine, but decreased carnosine and creatinine, were the main newly found G group-associated metabolites, which might contribute to the improved lamb meat functional quality. Compared to the F group, the G group feeding increased the contents of sweet amino acids (e.g., glycine, alanine, serine, and threonine) and umami amino acids (e.g., glutamic acid and aspartic acid) in the muscle, and G and GF groups increased the level of meat polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), especially the concentration of n3 PUFA, and reduced n6/n3 in the muscle by targeted metabolomics. The abundance of ruminal Moryella was decreased, and Schwartzia and Anaeroplasma were increased in the G group, which were both strongly correlated with the n3 PUFA and other functional compounds in the muscle of lambs. In conclusion, artificial pasture grazing modified the meat amino acid and fatty acid composition as well as the related biological pathways through rescheduling the rumen bacterial community, which would be a better selection for production of healthier lamb meat products.

BackgroundThe molecular mechanisms that govern cambial activity in angiosperms are well established, but little is known about these molecular mechanisms in gymnosperms. Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook), a diploid (2n  = 2x  = 22) gymnosperm, is one of the most important industrial and commercial timber species in China. Here, we performed transcriptome sequencing to identify the repertoire of genes expressed in cambium tissue of Chinese fir.Methodology/Principal FindingsBased on previous studies, the four stage-specific cambial tissues of Chinese fir were defined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In total, 20 million sequencing reads (3.6 Gb) were obtained using Illumina sequencing from Chinese fir cambium tissue collected at active growth stage, with a mean length of 131 bp and a N50 of 90 bp. SOAPdenovo software was used to assemble 62,895 unigenes. These unigenes were further functionally annotated by comparing their sequences to public protein databases. Expression analysis revealed that the altered expression of six homologous genes (ClWOX1, ClWOX4, ClCLV1-like, ClCLV-like, ClCLE12, and ClPIN1-like) correlated positively with changes in cambial activities; moreover, these six genes might be directly involved in cambial function in Chinese fir. Further, the full-length cDNAs and DNAs for ClWOX1 and ClWOX4 were cloned and analyzed.ConclusionsIn this study, a large number of tissue/stage-specific unigene sequences were generated from the active growth stage of Chinese fir cambium. Transcriptome sequencing of Chinese fir not only provides extensive genetic resources for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cambial activities in Chinese fir, but also is expected to be an important foundation for future genetic studies of Chinese fir. This study indicates that ClWOX1 and ClWOX4 could be possible reverse genetic target genes for revealing the molecular mechanisms of cambial activities in Chinese fir.

In this study, the selective crystallization behavior of synthetic Fe t O-rich steelmaking slags modified by P 2 O 5 and Al 2 O 3 additions was explored using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques. Continuous cooling transformation diagrams of Fe-enriched and P-enriched phases were constructed. It was found that P 2 O 5 addition can suppress the crystallization due to the increasing viscosity caused by increasing degree of polymerization; however, an increase of Al 2 O 3 content accelerated the precipitation of dystectic MgFeAlO 4 , copolymerized by [AlO 4 ]-tetrahedra and [FeO 4 ]-tetrahedra units. It was also noted that the content of phosphorus in P-enriched phase can reach a high value as 28.71 wt pct for the slags modified by 15.17 wt pct Al 2 O 3 . The nonisothermal crystallization kinetics derived from activation energy and the structure of the slags explained by Raman spectra were further analyzed, which was well in accordance with the above analysis.
