The potential of heteropoly acid H 3 PW 12 O 40 to catalyze the hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose under hydrothermal conditions was explored. This technology could contribute to sustainable societies in the future by using cellulose biomass. A study to optimize the reaction conditions, such as the amount of catalyst, reaction time, temperature, and the amount of cellulose used, was performed. A remarkably high yield of glucose (50.5%) and selectivity higher than 90% at 453 K for 2 h with a mass ratio of cellulose to H 3 PW 12 O 40 of 0.42 were achieved. This was attributed to the high hydrothermal stability and the excellent catalytic properties, such as the strong Brønsted acid sites. This homogeneous catalyst can be recycled for reuse by extraction with diethyl ether. The results illustrate that H 3 PW 12 O 40 is an environmentally benign acid catalyst for the hydrolysis of cellulose.

Infection with Toxoplasma gondii is common and usually asymptomatic, but it can have serious consequences in pregnant women if passed to the developing fetus. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in pregnant women and to identify the possible risk factors associated with T. gondii infection in China. Of a sample of 235 pregnant women in Changchun, China, 25 (10.6%) were found by ELISA to be positive for IgG and none (0%) for IgM. Major risk factors were found by bivariate and multivariate analysis to include eating raw or undercooked meat, unwashed raw vegetables or fruit, contact with cats, living in rural areas, and low educational standards. In order to lower congenital infection, pregnant women need to be informed about the risk factors for toxoplasmosis.

A novel damage-tolerant bulk material with superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties is fabricated by a facile method.

Planting patterns affect nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) acquisition and distribution in maize and soybean under intercropping conditions. Here we reveal that strip relay-intercropping increases the N, P, and K uptake and distribution across plant organs (root, straw, and seed) of maize and soybean, accelerates the dry-matter production of intercrop-species, and compensates the slight maize yield loss by considerably increasing the soybean yield. In a two-year experiment, soybean was planted with maize in different planting patterns (SI, 50:50 cm and SII, 40:160 cm) of relay-intercropping, both planting patterns were compared with sole cropping of maize (SM) and soybean (SS). As compared to SI, SII increased the N, P, and K accumulation in each organ of soybean by 20, 32, and 18 (root) %, 71, 61, and 76 (straw) %, and 68, 65, and 62 (seed) %, respectively, whereas decreased the N, P, and K accumulation in each organ of maize by 1, 4, and 8 (root) %, 1, 10, and 3 (straw) %, and 5, 10, and 8 (seed) %, respectively. Overall, in SII, relay-cropped soybean accumulated 91% of total nutrient uptake (TNU) of sole soybean plants, and relay-cropped maize accumulated 94% of TNU of sole maize plants.

Porous polytetrafluoroethylene films were positively or negatively corona-charged at room or elevated temperatures and their charge-storage behaviour was investigated by means of isothermal surface-potential and thermally stimulated discharge-current measurements. In addition, electron micrographs of the sample morphology were taken and the influence of high humidities on the surface-charge decay was investigated. For comparison, nominally non-porous polytetrafluoroethylene films were studied in the same manner. It was found that porosity may lead to significantly enhanced surface-charge stability for both polarities if the relative humidity is not too high. Further investigations are under way in order to better understand this behaviour and to employ it for electret applications.

Collagen hydrogel has been regarded as an excellent biomaterial because it is an abundant and sustainable resource and has good biocompatibility and controllable cell-based biodegradability. However, the poor mechanical properties of collagen hydrogel are the main disadvantage preventing it from having wide applications. In this communication, we use aldehyde-functionalized dextran, which is prepared from the oxidation of another natural polymer dextran, as a macromolecular cross-linker to enhance the strength of the collagen hydrogel. The resulting collagen/aldehyde-functionalized dextran (Col/ DAD) hydrogels are much stronger and show better thermostability than the pristine collagen hydrogel, as expected. The maximum compressive strength of the Col/DAD hydrogel is 32.5 ± 1.6 kPa, which is about 20 times more than that of the pristine collagen hydrogel. We also prove that our method maintains the good biocompatibility of the collagen hydrogel and does not bring the cytotoxicity often observed from conventional chemical cross-linking in the product. Therefore, the strong collagen hydrogel made by oxidized dextran modification may have a great potential in tissue engineering and other biomedical fields.

H5N6 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) may pose a potential human risk as suggested by the first documented naturally-acquired human H5N6 virus infection in 2014. Here, we report the first cases of fatal H5N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) infection in a domestic cat and wild birds. These cases followed human H5N6 infections in China and preceded an H5N6 outbreak in chickens. The extensive migration routes of wild birds may contribute to the geographic spread of H5N6 AIVs and pose a risk to humans and susceptible domesticated animals, and the H5N6 AIVs may spread from southern China to northern China by wild birds. Additional surveillance is required to better understand the threat of zoonotic transmission of AIVs.
