Many triazene derivatives have been synthesized and applied to analytical chemistry in China and other countries in the last twenty years. In the presence of a surfactant, the triazene derivatives can react with metal elements in the IB and IIB groups, etc., and with transition metal elements in weak basic media and have been widely applied to spectrophotometric determination of zinc, cadmium, mercury, silver etc., as metal elements in waste water, biological, alloy and geological samples. In these methods, most of the color reaction systems showed high sensitivity and selectivity. In recent years, many new triazene reagents have been designed and synthesized. In comparison with previous reagents, the new reagents represent a further development in analytical characteristics and application range. The following is a brief introduction and a short review of these reagents with regard to their synthesis, purification, structures, analytical characteristics and application. 87 references, mainly published in the last ten years, are presented.

An efficient route to synthesize 2'-spiro[2-oxocyclopentyl]cyclopropyl nucleoside analogues via KO t Bu promoted Michael addition-initiated cyclopropanation reactions of α-thymine acrylates with α-chloro-cycloalkanones has been developed. A wide range of C(2′)-spirocyclic modified nucleoside analogues were obtained with excellent diastereoselectivities (> 20∶1) and good yields (up to 85%).
