Hayati önem taşıyan intihar davranışı farklı alanlarda yapılan çalışmalarda araştırma konusu olmuştur. Eğitim seviyesindeki artışın intihar davranışını azaltması beklense de yazında arttırdığı yönünde çalışmalar da bulunmaktadır. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada diğer çalışmalardan farklı olarak yükseköğretim mezunlarının intihar davranışında özellikle ekonomik faktörlerin rolü araştırılmıştır. Bu kapsamda ekonomik faktörler (istihdam edilen yükseköğretim mezunu kadınların toplam nüfus içerisindeki oranı, istihdam edilen yükseköğretim mezunu erkeklerin toplam nüfus içerisindeki oranı, kişi başına gayri safi yurt içi hasıla ve ücret) ve sosyal faktörlerin (yüksekokul ve fakülte mezunlarının toplam nüfus içerisindeki oranı, lisansüstü mezunlarının (yüksek lisans ve doktora) toplam nüfus içerisindeki oranı, alınan göç) yükseköğretim mezunlarının intihar davranışına etkisi genelleştirilmiş momentler yöntemiyle (Generalized Method of Moments -System GMM-) araştırılmıştır. Analizde ikinci düzey İstatistiki Bölge Birimleri Sınıflandırmasına (İBBS) göre (Türkiye'nin yirmi altı alt bölgesi) Türkiye İstatistik Kurumu (TÜİK) ve Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Sosyal Güvenlik Kurumu (SGK) 2008-2019 dönemi verileri kullanılmıştır. Yükseköğretim mezunlarının intihar davranışında ekonomik faktörlerin etkili olduğu, söz konusu etkinin cinsiyete göre farklılık oluşturduğu yönünde sonuca ulaşılmıştır. Yükseköğrenim mezunlarının intihar davranışına istihdam edilen yükseköğrenim mezunu erkeklerin negatif yönde, istihdam edilen yükseköğrenim mezunu kadınların ise, pozitif yönde etkisi olduğu görülmüştür.
