Teachers need to update their knowledge and skills on curricula, psychology, and pedagogy of the learners and new research on teaching and learning; hence, they need appropriate in-service training, as well. However, the professional development practices in which they participate are mostly irrelevant to what they need and stay just in theory. Current researches criticized the inadequacy and inappropriateness of the traditional methods of teachers' professional development. In this research, the views and the suggestions of the novice teachers were investigated on in-service training, which was arranged as a part of the induction program. This research is a descriptive study and the participants consist of 494 teachers who participated in teacher induction program. A questionnaire form was used including open-ended questions. The results showed that in-service training did not make any contribution to some teachers and their personal development. The negative views on the trainers and the setting where the in-service training was conducted are other significant points for the evaluation. Therefore, it can be suggested that the planning process should be carefully carried out in order for inservice training to be effective and sustainable and the andragogy principles should be taken into account in organizing the teaching and learning process.
As education has many variables, essential arrangements are required in different areas to enhance its quality. School buildings, environmental arrangements, teaching and learning process, sources and materials, teachers, principals, health and security are the variables of which come to mind first. The concept of 'child-friendly school (CFS)' which was initiated and attempted to actualize by UNICEF's studies, has a nature including all these variables listed above and even more. The current study tires to identify to what extend the teachers, the principals and the secondary school students (5 th to 8 th grades) perceive their school as child-friendly. The mixed method approach was chosen for the study. The quantitative data was collected with 'Child-Friendly School Scale (CFSS)' developed by the researchers. A total of 54 schools and 4007 students comprise the sample, and the scale was implemented in one class from each grade level chosen randomly. The qualitative data were obtained from the volunteer teachers. Results revealed that the CFS characteristics of the schools changed according to the socioeconomic level of the school, gender of the students and the grade level. It can be suggested to construct a sense of awareness for the child-friendly school concept, to provide the continuity of the arrangements and to make them functional.
<span>A pedagogical formation certificate is required to become a teacher in secondary schools in Turkey. This certificate program, which is required to obtain in addition to a bachelor’s degree from any faculty other than the education faculties, aims at providing the knowledge, capabilities and attitudes required by the profession of teaching. This study aims at determining the perceptions of prospective teachers attending the pedagogical formation program about the properties of a good teacher. Data were collected using a survey comprising an open-ended question and content analysis was conducted to obtain the themes in this study, which adopted a descriptive method. Based on the properties of a good teacher, expressed by the prospective teachers, the themes “personal characteristics”, “enforcement of teaching process”, “establishing a democratic classroom environment” and “assessment and evaluation” are obtained.</span>
In present circumstances, it has become inevitable for individuals to continue obtaining new information and skills throughout their lives. Having learned to learn and information literate individuals are able to meet their learning needs both in career and personal terms by themselves. The important aspect is the individual feels the need to learn and knows how and where to meet these needs. Feeling those can be considered as the basic requirement to make efforts in order to meet them. However, the surrounding circumstances may support or prevent meeting these needs. Since the situation of being a lifelong learner will be examined based on the present working conditions, the study is designed as embedded multiple case study. Maximum variety is ensured in the study group by taking into account the various academic titles, gender, and fields of study. The interview form is developed based on the literature and revised according to the opinions of specialists. The data has been collected by doing individual interviews with academics and a content analysis has been performed. In conclusion of the analysis performed, such themes as the need to become lifelong learners, the factors supporting to become lifelong learners and the factors preventing from becoming lifelong learners have been reached.
Perspectives on beginning teachers’ possible problems and their reasons force many of the countries to develop teacher induction programs. Teacher induction programs are extensive, consistent and ongoing professional processes aiming to train, support, and protect novice teachers. In Turkey, the process of “teacher induction program” which has been initiated in 2016 is a regulation to train novice teachers for six months. The rationale of the program for the novice teachers is to have more practical experience and in turn to teach effectively in their classrooms. As each new regulation can be accompanied by some obscurities, scientific research will serve to increase the quality of the processes and practices in teacher induction programs. In this sense, the current research aims to determine the views of 357 novice teachers on the goal achievement of the teacher induction program. A questionnaire form was developed to collect the data consisting of 43 questions one of which is an open-ended question. Results suggested that preservice education and teacher induction program have similar contributions in regard to the goal achievement of the teacher induction program. Moreover, considering the process as a whole, the mentor has an important role in the development of novice teachers.
