El lento desarrollo científico experimentado en América Latina en las últimas décadas ha retrasado la incorporación de la experimentación con animales de laboratorio, sin embargo, esta realidad ha comenzado a cambiar. En la actualidad, se evidencia un extraordinario progreso científico que ha promovido la introducción e incremento del uso de animales de laboratorio como una importante herramienta para el avance de las ciencias biomédicas. A raíz de este auge, surge la necesidad de proporcionar a la comunidad científica la formación y directrices en todos los aspectos relacionados con la experimentación animal. Es responsabilidad de cada país legislar esta práctica para que no solo por razones bioéticas, sino también legales, se considere el derecho de los animales y con ello su bienestar. Las neoplasias de cabeza y cuello representan el 17.6 % a nivel mundial. El cáncer de la cavidad bucal es uno de los más comunes que aparece en dicha región, siendo el 95 % carcinoma epidermoide con un pobre pronóstico de supervivencia, debido a que algunos se desarrollan a partir de trastornos potencialmente malignos peligrosamente asintomáticos, por lo que su detección precoz es imprescindible. El objetivo de la presente investigación es caracterizar los trastornos bucales potencialmente malignos mediante aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos y topográficos, en pobladores atendidos en el subcentro de salud de Montalvo Ecuador.
Las enfermedades infecciosas respiratorias son motivos de consulta frecuentes en niños y jóvenes en general, y particularmente, si se trata de la consulta del departamento médico de una institución educativa, de ahí que constituye un problema de salud que de no controlarse puede originar una epidemia en las aulas que atenta contra el desarrollo académico del grupo. El objetivo de esta investigación es determinar el comportamiento epidemiológico de las infecciones respiratoria agudas en estudiantes que fueron atendidos en la consulta médica general de una unidad educativa de Ambato, durante los años lectivo 2016 y 2017.
Introducción: El alcoholismo constituye un problema psicosocial. El promedio del consumo de alcohol en América es mayor que en otras regiones del mundo y su consumo como droga portera, debe ser seguido de cerca en adolescentes ya que las complicaciones médicosociales que produce en el período citado pueden ser fatales. Referentes teóricos consideran que el consumo de alcohol se relaciona con la disminución del peso corporal y más aún durante la adolescencia. Objetivo: Determinar la ganancia del peso corporal en ratas machos adolescentes sometidas al consumo de alcohol. Método: Se emplearon 78 ratas Wistar albina macho de 30 días, las que se incluyeron en cuatro grupos: experimental y control. Se les administró durante un mes y dos meses tratamiento con etanol diluido en agua al 40%, por vía oral a 3 g/kg de peso al grupo experimental y agua en igual dosis al grupo control, una vez al día, por cánula intraesofágica. Resultados y discusión: Las ratas del grupo tratado con etanol tuvieron una ganancia de peso significativamente menor en los dos tiempos de tratamiento que las ratas del grupo control. A los dos meses de tratamiento con etanol el peso fue menor que al mes de su consumo, hallazgos que coinciden con los reportados por otros autores, quienes relacionan la ingestión de etanol con una disminución en la ganancia del peso corporal en animales jóvenes. Conclusiones: El consumo de este tóxico en ratas adolescentes disminuye el peso corporal, aún en dosis moderadas.
