ABSTRACT   The Aim: To investigate and distinguish the anti-obesity activities of Arum maculatum, Nasturtium officinale plant extracts and exercise against high-fat diet induced obesity at rat model. Methods: Thirty healthy male albino rats were randomly separated into 5 groups (n=6): Normal control (NC), high-fat diet control (HFD-C), Arum maculatum extract (AME), Nasturtium officinale extract (NOE) and exercise. The NC group fed with normal diet (ND) and all other groups a high fat diet (HFD) to induce obesity and hyperlipidemia for 8 weeks. Corresponding treatments were established to the respective groups during study period. Rat body weights (BW) and food intake were obtained weekly. Glucose, Total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low, very low and high-density lipoprotein cholesterols (LDL-C, VLDL-C and HDL-C), malondialdehyde (MDA) with aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were estimated in serum at the end of the study. Results: The HFD-C rats were associated with a significant increase (P<0.05) in BW gain with the elevations in serum glucose, lipid profiles (TC, TG, LDL-C &VLDL-C), liver function tests (AST & ALT) and MDA in comparison with NC rats whereas the level of serum HDL-C decreased. Furthermore, treatments of AME, NOE and exercise along with HFD significantly (P<0.05) reduced HFD-induced changes in BW gain and the levels of serum biochemical parameters as compared to rats fed HFD. The most significant effect on reducing weight gain at model rats were recorded by NOE treatment, while the attenuated effects AME on BW gain and AST, exercise on BW gain, TG, VLDL, MDA and AST were not significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: Consumption of HFD for 8 weeks caused HFD-C rats obese, hyperglycemic and hyperlipidemic with hepatic cellular injury when compared to the NC rats. AME, NOE and exercise treatments were suppressed the development of obesity as well as attenuated HFD induced changes in serum biochemical parameters of the respective groups when compared to the HFD-C group.  

The aim: This study was designed to explore the potential hepatoprotective effects of Nasturtium officinale and Allium polyanthum plant extracts against CCl4-induced hepatic injury in rat model. Methods: Thirty healthy male albino rats were equally divided into 5 groups: Normal control (NC), Positive control (Pos-C), Nasturtium officinale extract (NOE), Allium polyanthum extract (APE), and NOE + APE. The animals were fed with a standard diet and distilled water ad libitum. Except for NC, all other groups were exposed to CCl4 at every 72 hours for 3 weeks to induce hepatic damage. Corresponding treatments were established to the respective groups during study period. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Total serum bilirubin (TSB), Total protein (TP), Albumin (ALB) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in serum at the end of the study. Histopathological analysis of the liver sections was also determined. Results: CCl4-treated rats were showed significant increase (p < 0.05) in the levels of serum enzyme activities (AST, ALT, & ALP), TSB and MDA; reflecting the hepatocellular damage caused by CCl4 compared with NC rats, whereas   the levels of TP and ALB were decreased. Furthermore, the histological examination of liver tissues showed that CCl4 triggered several histological variations in the liver tissues.  Treatments of NOE and APE along with CCl4 for 3 weeks significantly (P<0.05) improved the CCl4-induced changes in serum biochemical parameters and liver histology as compared to Pos-C rats indicating the protection of hepatic cells. Conclusion: Treatments of NOE and APE either in separate or in combination have shown significant improvement in CCl4-induced hepatopathy in experimental rats as evidenced by observed results in serum and hepatic histopathological examinations

Drinking alcoholic beverages recently is common in many parts of the world, liver is a principal organ that involved in toxic effects of alcohol and it remains a serious health problem globally. Fatty liver (steatosis) was induced in male albino rats by alcohol 40% orally (3.76gm/kgm BW/day) for the period of 4 weeks, then green tea extract (GTE) and omega-3 (OMG-3) fish oil were used as treatments for improvement and investigating their comparison potential role for the next 4 weeks. At the end of the experiment, the rats were fasted overnight, blood samples through the cardiac puncture and liver organ were collected for biochemical and histopathological analysis respectively. Biochemical parameters including: lipid profiles: (total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), serum malondialdehyde (MDA), liver function tests (LFT): (Serum albumin (ALB), serum total protein (TP), total serum bilirubin (TSB), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and finally hepatic histological changes were also investigated. Alcoholic rats were associated with significant elevation (P<0.05) in the levels of serum TC, TG, LDL-C, MDA, TSB, ALT, AST and ALP, whereas the levels of serum HDL-C and TP significantly (P<0.05) decreased with no significant change (P>0.05) of serum ALB level. treatment of alcohol-fed rats with GTE and OMG-3 oil either alone or in their combination have significant role (P<0.05) in lowering the injury effects of alcohol evidenced by reversing the results obtained on serum lipid profiles, MDA, LFTs and hepatic histological changes after their treatments during the amelioration study. Ethanol consumption impaired hepatic functions, disturbed lipid metabolism, induced hyperlipidemia and increased oxidative stress. Aqueous extracts of GT and OMG-3 oil significantly improved alcohol-induced liver injury through improvement of serum markers of hepatic injury, their hypolipidemic actions and hepatic histologic recovery. Co-treatments of GT+OMG-3 have more protective effect or faster progression against ALD than their treatments alone.
