Governance practices (GP) depict various conceptual designs, yet there are still limited investigations on how GP can influence the performance of the co-operatives. This signified that the most excellent practices from corporate governance literature might not be relevant to co-operatives because they have dual-pronged economic and social objectives for their members. In the case of the Malaysian palm oil sector, the independent oil palm smallholders or growers are encouraged to establish a co-operative to manage their farms and economic activities while finding a solution to the local community's contemporary conundrums. However, the oil palm smallholders are often neglected in the palm oil sector's complex value chain due to the remoteness of smallholders from farm knowledge and training infrastructure, and poor farm management. Realising these challenges, the oil palm cooperatives need to implement a comprehensive GP to manage their agricultural activities. Consequently, this study aims to examine the GP as a second-order construct to predict the performance of oil palm co-operatives. Data was obtained from board members of oil palm co-operatives and then analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). As per our findings, GP is validated as a second-order construct comprised of three crucial dimensions, namely, responsibility, management, and audit and control. Further, the results confirmed that GP had a positive and significant influence on co-operative performance. The contribution of this study is to guide the policymakers and co-operatives' managers to implement the palatable GP that will lead to greater performance of the cooperatives.
This research explores the roles of social status and parental influence on student's attitudes to choose careers in agriculture with the moderating role of career prospects among Malaysian students. The survey method was adopted to collect the data from 183 students who enrolled in agricultural related courses. Data of five major sections such as demographic profiles, attitude, social status, parental influence and career prospect were collected by questionnaire. The PLS-SEM technique was used to analyze the data using Smart PLS 3.0. The average age of the respondent is 21 years old with females 66.1% and male 33.9%. The majority are Malay (89.6%), followed by Chinese (6.6%) and Indian (3.8%). This study suggested that social status has significant influenced the student attitude towards careers in agricultural sectors, but not parental status. Furthermore, career prospects moderated the positive relationship between social status and student's attitudes towards an agricultural career. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are also discussed.
The turn over intention has dramatically caused high turnover among Malaysian unskilled workers in oil palm industry. Therefore, this study was to determine the level of local unskilled workers perception of turnover intention and provide additional insight for the industry players and policy maker to identify the needs and characteristics of the Malaysian employees to them to work in the oil palm plantation in future. This research used quantitative approach and cross- sectional method to address the current scenario in the oil palm plantation. Data were obtained from a field survey of 347 oil palm plantation employees all over Malaysia. A descriptive and cross-tab analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings of the research revealed the workers’ demographic characteristics namely age, gender and work tenure have the intention to leave. This research described that majority of respondents (58.5%) has intentions to leave from present job to another industry. Finding also found higher salary and allowance and free health service are keys to higher motivations. It was also suggested that employers should provide an attractive benefits package as a strategy to attract and retain workers.
Koperasi Penanam Sawit Mampan (KPSM) or in English known as Sustainable Oil Palm Growers Cooperative has been established since 2010. KPSM is an alternative model that can meet the needs of oil palm independent smallholders (ISH) and play a role in helping to improve community development. The main objective of this cooperative is to improve the income of independent oil palm smallholders. The objective of the implementation of the study was to identify the customer satisfaction level towards the FFB sales service operated by KPSM. This study involved independent oil palm smallholders who sent fresh fruit bunches (FFB) to KPSM cooperative collection centres. Questionnaires were distributed to 330 respondents and sampling was carried out by random sampling. The data were analysed using SPSS to analyse the quantitative data, which covered frequencies and percentages. The study findings indicated that the majority of respondents were KPSM members (61.9%), who cultivated palm full time, (69.6%) with an average age of 46 years old. The study also proved that the smallholders’ satisfaction level who received the services provided by the cooperative, was very good. However, customer satisfaction in terms of infrastructure amenities was less satisfactory, and the findings from this study were hoped to be able to assist various parties to improve the quality of services provided by KPSM.
