The study aims to identify the differences of mental health among orphan and non-orphan adolescents in Malaysia. This study used a quantitative method. The sample comprised of 240 orphans and 240 non-orphan adolescents, aged 13 to 17 years old selected through multistage sampling. The validated Malay version of Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale 21 Item (DASS21) used in this study to measure mental health among the orphan and non-orphan adolescents. The findings showed that there have differences of mental health among orphan and non-orphan adolescents which is orphans had significantly higher level of mental health problem than non-orphan respectively; depression, anxiety and stress. Result revealed that all parties including government organization, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), orphanage centers and guardians need to regulate actions such as program implementation and intervention to ensure the continuity of mental health especially among orphan adolescents in Malaysia.
This phenomenological research design of qualitative study was conducted to understand the experiences of creative relationship during Expressive Arts Therapy group counseling session. A total of seven girls between the ages of 12-18 years who have been involved in juvenile delinquent behaviors were selected using purposive sampling groups. Interviews, observations and document analysis were conducted for data collection. Validity and reliability of the process were done through triangulation, peer review and audit trail. Data analysis was made to give overall meaning, meaning of discrimination unit, initial transfer of meaning units, transfer units psychological meaning, structure of individual psychology, and general psychological structure. The results showed that there are some psychological issues that have to be shared and expressed by all subjects in the study. The study participants shared their feelings such as anger, revenge, hatred, guilt and regret, disappointment and sadness, rebellious, begging for affection, looking for happiness, satisfaction and enjoyment of life, issues of low self-esteem and other issues concerning trauma and emotional disorders that have been experienced in their lives. In conclusion, this study provides some implications in terms of techniques and practices of counseling in Malaysia and the need for further research.
This study aims to look at the impact of the Career Exploration Module on the ability of career planning, career self-efficacy and career maturity among community college students. A quasi-experimental design was used to evaluate using non-equivalent pre-test and post-test control group. The sample comprised 122 semester four students from two community colleges in the state of Malacca. Data were collected using three sets of instruments; i) Career Planning Competencies Instruments to measure the ability of career planning, ii) Career Maturity Inventory-Revised (CM-R) to measure attitudes and skills in career planning and iii) Career Decision Making Self Efficacy Scale (CDMSE-SF) to measure the level of students' career self-efficacy. The reliability of the instruments was analyzed using Cronbach Alpha and the value for all three instruments exceeded .70. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive analysis uses mean, frequency and percentage to see the difference between groups while inferential analysis uses MANOVA to see the difference between the groups after the experiment. The results showed that there was a significant difference between the control group and the experimental group for the variables of the abilities of career planning, career self-efficacy and career maturity after the experiment. The results of the experiment have shown that the ability of career planning, career self-efficacy and career maturity can be improved if students follow a systematic career program. The usage of Careers Exploration Module has proven to build community college students in improving their career skills.
Purpose: The aim of this study is to see the effectiveness of the use of Art Therapy Module (ATM) on the well-being of single mothers. Methodology: Experimental quasi methods involving pre-test and post-test were used. A total of 40 respondents were involved in this study and divided into four groups consisting of ten respondents. This ATM was conducted through a five-week counseling session. Collection of study data was done by using Single Mothers Welfare Instrument to measure stress, resilience, mobility and well-being before and after therapy. Main Finding: The findings depicted a decrease in stress levels, increased resilience, coping and well-being. Hypothesis testing showed that there was a significant difference between pre-test and post-test on the well-being of single mothers in terms of stress, resilience and coping. Application: The findings showed that ATM is effective in helping single mothers to respond to stress, enhance resilience and coping skills to improve their well-being and quality of life. Novelty/Originality: ATM module also contributes to the development of knowledge in the field of counseling, particularly in treatment options offered by counselors for clients such as single mothers.
