Aim: The aim of this paper is to share the initial experiences on a European Union (EU) Lifelong Learning Programme Leonardo Da Vinci Transfer of Innovation Project related to the use of simulation-based learning with nursing students from Turkey. The project started at the end of the 2010 involving 7 partners from 3 different countries including Turkey, England, and Italy. Methods:This project is divided into 7 work packages (WP). In this paper, experiences from the first three WPs (WP1: Preparation and dissemination of the project. WP2: Regulation of the project management. WP3: Development of the evaluation tools used to evaluate the impact of the innovative practice within the coordinating partner's institution) are shared. Results:In the WP1 and WP2: the kick-off meeting was organized in Turkey, the coordinating partner's country. During the meeting project-related events were planned and the steering committee of the project was formed. A strong team spirit within the partnership was established. For the dissemination of the project, a poster and flier of the project were prepared and placed on corporate boards visible to students and teaching staff and put on the partners' institutional websites. Regular bulletins of the project were also prepared and posted on the project website. In the WP3, student data sheet, items for students' satisfaction questionnaire and confidence scale were created based on the literature. Trauma patient scenarios (abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma, pelvic fracture and traumatic amputation) were created to test the target group's knowledge. Ethical approval was obtained from the coordinating partner institution. A pilot study to test the cases was conducted. Following the pilot study, the final version of the student data sheet and scenario cases was created. The second meeting was organized in Italy. In this meeting, the results of the pilot study, the scenario cases, and the Patient Intervention Self Confidence /Competence Scale were evaluated. Conclusion:The work on this EU project is still in progress. Considering that learning from experience is an important part of nursing education, sharing experiences on such a project related to using simulation as an innovative teaching strategy in nursing education in Turkey should provide an example to others who want to develop other EU projects in nursing education.
Background: This study aims to investigate the possible effect of discharge training and counseling on functional autonomy and post-discharge problems of the elderly patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Methods: This randomized-controlled study was conducted in 36 patients (18 patients in the control group and 18 patients in the study group) aged 65 years and above who underwent elective CABG at a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected by using three questionnaires and Functional Autonomy Measurement System. The control group receiving routine nursing care was assessed preoperatively and at the end of ninth week after surgery. The study group receiving discharge training and counseling by the investigator was assessed preoperatively and in the second and 10 th post-discharge days and at the end of ninth week after surgery. Results: The postoperative functional autonomy levels of the study group and control group were-8.8±4.5 and-13.5±8.5, respectively. The control group experienced seven of a total of 11 problems compared to the study group after discharge. There was a statistically significant difference in shoulder, up and low back or neck pain between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion:Our study res...
Surgical outcomes due to cystectomy continue to improve, but this is not enough to eliminate all physical, psychological and social problems that patients experience after discharge and that continue to impact their quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study is to determine the QOL and problems experienced by urostomy patients. The data of this cross‐sectional and descriptive study were gathered from 17 patients who underwent first and elective radical cystectomy and ileal conduit in one university hospital in Turkey between March 9, 2009, and September 5, 2010. Data were collected by using two forms and the ‘Short Form‐36 Quality of Life Scale (SF‐36)’. Number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, t‐test and anova were used for data analysis. The mean age of patients was 64·76 ± 8·81. The majority of the patients in the study were male (94·1%). It was found that many patients experienced constipation (82·4%), problems related to incision site (64·7%), fatigue (58·8%), myalgia, limitation of movement and difficulties with changing stoma pouch (52·9%). The patients who experienced problems generated lower mean QOL scores than patients who did not experience any post‐discharge problems. In conclusion, urostomy patients experienced many physical and psychological problems after discharge which affected the patients' QOL. It is recommended that specialist stoma care nurse services are established in each hospital in Turkey to give comprehensive discharge training pre‐operatively and post‐operatively in order to prepare the patient for post‐operative recovery and adjustment to an ostomy, to continue counselling during home follow‐ups for decreasing psychologically and physically problems related to stoma and for improving patients' physical, psychological and social well‐being, and the QOL.
