Online PEMs pertaining to VCP are written above the recommended reading levels. Overall, materials written at lower grade levels are more understandable. However, articles of identical grade levels had varying levels of understandability. The PEMAT may provide a more critical evaluation of the quality of a PEM when compared with readability formulas. Both readability and understandability should be used to evaluate PEMs.

The objectives of this study were to assess the readability and understandability of online materials on ZD, evaluate them against the existing criteria, and investigate the relationship between readability and understandability.

Background Surgery is often indicated for definitive biopsy or as the primary treatment modality for pediatric skull base lesions. Traditionally, open surgical approaches were utilized to address pediatric skull base pathology. However recently, expanded endoscopic sinus surgery has been utilized as a minimally invasive approach to addressing skull base pathology in the pediatric population. Purpose This review provides an overview of the current literature evaluating the unique anatomic challenges of the pediatric skull and the safety and efficacy of expanded skull base procedures in the pediatric population. Findings The pediatric skull base and sinus anatomy is small and continues to develop throughout childhood leading to unique surgical challenges. Sphenoid sinus pneumatization and intercarotid distance at the skull base are two significant anatomic challenges to pediatric skull base surgery. Despite the distinctive anatomy challenges, recent studies demonstrate that the safety and efficacy of expanded endoscopic sinus surgery appear to be equivalent to traditional open surgical approaches. Conclusion Expanded endoscopic sinus surgery in the pediatric population has similar efficacy and safety as the traditional open approaches.

Objective This study investigates the impact of postoperative gabapentin on opioid consumption and pain control following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and/or septoplasty. Methods Patients who underwent ESS and/or septoplasty at a single institution from 2021 to 2022 were enrolled. All patients received postoperative hydrocodone‐acetaminophen for pain control. Half of the patients were also prescribed gabapentin for the first postoperative day in addition to hydrocodone‐acetaminophen. Subjects completed the Revised American Pain Society Patient Outcome Questionnaire 24 h and 7 days after surgery. We conducted a multivariable regression analysis to assess opioid consumption and improvement in pain scores in the first week between gabapentin and non‐gabapentin groups. Results A total of 102 subjects, 51 in each arm, were enrolled. The mean age was 52 years and 53% of participants were female. Controlling for important baseline demographic, clinical, and surgically related variables, the addition of postoperative gabapentin was associated with a 44% (9.5 mg from 21.6 mg) reduction in opioids consumed in the first postoperative week (B = −9.54, 95% C.I. = [−17.84, −1.24], p = 0.025). In addition, patients in both arms exhibited similar improvement in pain severity and sleep interference in the first 7 days (B = −1.59, 95% C.I. = [−5.03, 1.84], p = 0.36). Conclusion To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the impact of postoperative gabapentin on opioid consumption and pain control following ESS and/or septoplasty. Our analysis demonstrated that postoperative gabapentin effectively reduced opioid use during the first postoperative week without compromising pain control. Hearing loss can be attributed to a variety of inherited and environmental noises (medications, infections, etc.). In recent decades, our improved understanding of genetics, molecular biology, and audiologic pathways has led to the discovery of a variety of Hereditary Hearing Impairments (HHI). HHI can be categorized as syndromic HL and non-syndromic HL, in which HL is associated with other pathophysiological manifestations. Currently, greater than 300 syndromic HLs are recognized, while more than 100 chromosomal loci and 40 genes are attributed for non-syndromic HLs. Improved understanding of the genes impaired in HL, including their structure and function, will soon lead to improvements in screening and possibly treatments. The following is a review of genetic HL where we discuss the definition, classifications, etiology, epidemiology, recognized syndromes, genetics, diagnostics, and screening methods of HL.
