Um nôvo meio é proposto para o isolamento de enterobacteriáceas. Baseia-se na propriedade de desanimar a fenil-alanina que possuem tôdas as bactérias dos grupos Proteus e Providencia. As colônias dêstes microrganismos apresentam no meio descrito coloração marrom característica. As colônias das outras enterobacteriáceas, fermentadoras rápidas ou lentas e não fermentadoras da lactose, apresentam aspecto diferente.Recebido para publicação em 31-7-1967. (1) Da Cadeira de Microbiologia e Imunologia Aplicadas da Faculdade de Higiene e Saúde Pública da USP.Quando se pretende isolar enterobacteriáceas constitui sempre um problema, nos diversos meios seletivos e diferenciais de que dispomos, a semelhança entre as colônias das bactérias dos grupos Proteus e Providencia e as das outras enterobacteriáceas não fermentadoras ou fermentadoras lentas da lactose. Geralmente, isolam-se diversas colônias suspeitas de serem de salmonelas ou shigelas que, na realidade, não raro são de Proteus ou de Providencia, grupos êstes identificáveis pela capacidade que apresentam todos os seus componentes de desaminar a fenil-alanina. Baseando-se nesta propriedade dêstes microrganismos, idealizou-se um nôvo meio de isolamento que, permitindo a separação das colônias dos microrganismos fermentadores rápidos ou tardios da lactose daquelas dos não fermentadores dêste açúcar, possibilitam, ao mesmo tempo, a diferenciação direta das colônias de Proteus e Providencia.A fórmula do meio proposto, denominado Agar lactose fenil-alanina (ALFA), é a seguinte:Para o preparo dêste meio, misturar num balão de vidro cloreto de sódio, extrato de levêdo, proteose-peptona, agar e água destilada (82,5 ml) ; aquecer até dissolver os ingredientes misturados e ajustar o pH a 7,2; em seguida, adicionar fenil-alanina, solução de vermelho de fenol a 1% (0,25 ml) e esterilizar em autoclave a 120°C durante 15 minu-
