The objective of the present study was to evaluate the age of alpacas as a risk factor to become infected with Sarcocystis sp. Blood samples were collected from 941 alpacas reared at the SAIS Túpac Amaru (Junín, Peru). Samples were stratified for statistical analysis in 5 age groups (<1, 1, 2, 3, ? 4 years). The sera were analyzed by the indirect ELISA test for the detection of Sarcocystis antibodies. The results showed 844 positive samples representing a seroprevalence of 89.7 ± 1.9% (46, 98, 96, 95 and 95% for < 1, 1, 2, 3, and ? 4 years old, respectively). There were statistical differences between age and the presence of Sarcocystis sp. antibodies (p<0.05).
The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Brucella sp. in cattle of the province of Canta, Lima, through the detection of antibodies in blood using the Rose Bengal test and then, the complement fixation test to confirm positive sera. A total of 486 serum samples were analysed and only one from the district of Santa Rosa de Quives was found positive. This indicated that the prevalence was 0.21% (1/486) with a confidence interval of 0.09 till 0.60%. The results showed that the presence of Brucella sp. in the province of Canta was very low, which may allow the implementation of a program for Brucella eradication.
The study was carried out during the calving season, between February and March 2006. Stool samples (n=487) were collected in alpacas of 1 to 15 days of age in four localities: Antacalla, La Raya, Quimsachata and Macusani. The faecal smears were processed following the Modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain. The 39% (130/336) of alpacas with diarrhea and 23% (35/151) of alpacas without diarrhea were positives to C. parvum infection. The logistic regression showed that this parasite does not represent a risk factor for neonatal diarrhea in the screened animals (OR: 1.5, IC 95%: 0.9-2.4). It was also determined that La
It was evaluated the prevalence and the incidence rate (force of morbidity of cysticercosis) in the period of January-April, 2000 in the porcine population of Matapalo's village (Zarumilla, Tumbes). In the first sampling, 922 animals older than 3 months were evaluated and 284 resulted positive representing a prevalence of 30.8 ± 3.0% . The second sampling, carried out three months later on 778 animals reported a prevalence of 20.8 ± 2.9%. A total of 314 negative animals at the first sampling were evaluated in the second sampling and 36 seroconverted to the EITB test resulting in an accumulated incidence of 11.5 ± 3.5%. A number of risk factors were analyzed for the prevalence of porcine cysticercosis finding out that village, age and sampling represented a factor of risk to find a positive animal. Similarly, several factors relating to incidence were analized and was found that the variables village, age, immunological condition of the mother, and sex represented risk factors to get the disease.
Palabras clave: virus de la enfermedad de Newcastle, aves silvestres ABSTRACTThe study evaluated the presence of the Newcastle disease virus in the Albufera de Medio Mundo lagoon, situated north of Lima. The lagoon is inhabited for various wild migrant bird species. Three sampling periods were conducted of six weeks each, colleting 900 fresh fecal samples from 11 species. Samples were inoculated in specific-pathogen free (SPF) embryonated eggs of 10 days of age for isolation of the virus. The hemagglutinant activity of the allantoic fluid showed negative results in all samples. The estimated prevalence calculated through a beta simulation was 0.1% with a distribution between 0.002 and 0.4%. The prevalence was too low for considering these birds as a possible source of infection toward domestic birds.
