Twenty-one strains of pink-pigmented bacteria, isolated from human clinical specimens and an environmental source, were compared with Pseudomonas mesophilica ATCC 29983 and Protaminobacter ruber ATCC 8457. These isolates were gram-negative, oxidative rods which were motile by means of a single polar flagellum; gave positive catalase, indophenol oxidase, urease, and amylase reactions; and grew slowly at 30°C. Fourteen isolates conformed to the designated type strains Pseudomonas mesophilica ATCC 29983 and Protaminobacter ruber ATCC 8457. The remaining seven strains represented an undescribed taxon. These pink bacteria appear to be invaders of debilitated patients with an underlying chronic disease.
A total of 374 clinical isolates ofEnterococcus spp. were characterized to determine the species distribution and vancomycin resistance. The ability of the Vitek system (bioMerieux Inc, Hazelwood, St. Louis, Mo.) to identify enterococci to the species level and to recognize vancomycin resistance by using computer software version 7.1 was evaluated. Conventional methods were used for identification and agar dilution was used for susceptibility testing, the results of which were as follows (presented as number of vancomycin-resistant isolates/number of members of that species identified): 219/234 E.faecium, 9/112 E. faecalis, 2/3 E. mundtii, 0/1 E. durans, 0/1 E. hirae, 0/1 E. raffinosis, and 0/1 E. avium. Ten enterococci were in the vancomycinintermediate category (six E. gallinarum, two E. casseliflavus, and one each ofE. faecium and E. faecalis). The V'itek GPI card correctly identified 98%o ofE.faecium isolates, 99%o ofE.faecalis isolates, and only two isolates of other enterococcal species. The GPS-TA card was 98% sensitive and 95% specific for the detection of vancomycin resistance, generating a total of four very major (1.6%) and five minor errors (1.3%).
In the course of the screening program for gonorrhea in New York City, a total of 964 N. meningitidis strains were recovered from the genitourinary tract and/or anal canal over a four-year period (April 1975-April 1979, the rate of such recoveries having tripled during this time.The majority of strains were isolated from anal canal cultures of male patients most of whom were seen in a clinic treating homosexuals. N. meningitidis and N. gonorrhoeae were cultured together from 41 patients: in 24 cases from different sites and in 17 instances from the same specimen. Evidence of clinical-
