Chikungunya is an arthropod-borne disease caused by the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus. It can be an important burden to public health and a great cause of morbidity and, sometimes, mortality. Understanding if and when disease control measures should be taken is key to curtail its spread. Dumont and Chiroleu (Math Biosc Eng 7(2):315-348, 2010) showed that the use of chemical control tools such as adulticide and larvicide, and mechanical control, which consists of reducing the breeding sites, would have been useful to control the explosive 2006 epidemic in Réunion Island. Despite this, chemical control tools cannot be of long-time use, because they can induce mosquito resistance, and are detrimental to the biodiversity. It is therefore necessary to develop and test new control tools that are more sustainable, with the same efficacy (if possible). Mathematical models of sterile insect technique (SIT) to prevent, reduce, eliminate or stop an epidemic of Chikungunya are formulated and analysed. In particular, we propose a new model that considers pulsed periodic releases, which leads to a hybrid dynamical system. This pulsed SIT model is coupled with the human population at different epidemiological states in order to assess its efficacy. Numerical simulations for the pulsed SIT, using an appropriate numerical scheme are provided. Analytical and numerical results indicate that pulsed SIT with small and frequent releases can be an alternative to chemical control tools, but only if it is used or applied early after the beginning of the epidemic or as a preventive tool.
In this paper, we propose a sex-structured entomological model that serves as a basis for design of control strategies relying on releases of sterile male mosquitoes (Aedes spp) and aiming at elimination of the wild vector population in some target locality. We consider different types of releases (constant and periodic impulsive), providing necessary conditions to reach elimination. However, the main part of the paper is focused on the study of the periodic impulsive control in different situations. When the size of wild mosquito population cannot be assessed in real time, we propose the so-called open-loop control strategy that relies on periodic impulsive releases of sterile males with constant release size. Under this control mode, global convergence towards the mosquito-free equilibrium is proved on the grounds of sufficient condition that relates the size and frequency of releases. If periodic assessments (either synchronized with releases or more sparse) of the wild population size are available in real time, we propose the so-called closed-loop control strategy, which is adjustable in accordance with reliable estimations of the wild population sizes. Under this control mode, global convergence to the mosquitofree equilibrium is proved on the grounds of another sufficient condition that relates not only the size and frequency of periodic releases but also the frequency of sparse measurements taken on wild populations. Finally, we propose a mixed control strategy that combines open-loop and closed-loop strategies. This control mode renders the best result, in terms of overall time needed to reach elimination and the number of releases to be effectively carried out during the whole release campaign, while requiring for a reasonable amount of released sterile insects.
International audienceModelling the biomechanics of growing trees is a non-classical problem, as the usual framework of structural mechanics does not take into account the evolution of the domain geometry due to growth processes. Incremental approaches have been used in rod theory to bypass this problem and to model the addition of new material points on an existing deformed structure. However, these approaches are based on the explicit time numerical algorithm of an unknown continuous model, and thus, the accuracy of the numerical results obtained cannot be analysed. A new continuous space-time formulation has been recently proposed to model the biomechanical response of growing rods. The aim of this paper is to discretise the corresponding non-linear system of partial differential equations and the linearised system in order to compare the numerical results with analytical solutions of the linearised problem. The finite element method is implemented to compute the space boundary problem and different time integration schemes are considered to solve the associated initial value problem with a special attention to the forward Euler method which is the analogue of the previously used incremental approach. The numerical results point out that the accuracy of the time integration schemes strongly depends on the value of the parameters. The forward Euler method may present slow convergence property and errors with significant orders of magnitude. Nevertheless, attention must be paid to implicit methods since, for specific values of the parameters and large time steps, they may lead to spurious solutions that may come from numerical instabilities. Hence, the second order Heun's method is an interesting alternative even if it is more time consuming
The aim of this paper is to develop a mathematical model to simulate mosquito dispersal and its control taking into account environmental parameters, like wind, temperature, or landscape elements. We particularly focus on Aedes albopictus mosquito which is now recognized as a major vector of human arboviruses, like chikungunya, dengue, or yellow fever. One way to prevent those epidemics is to control the vector population. Biological control tools, like the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT), are of great interest as an alternative to chemical control tools which are very detrimental to environment. The success of SIT is based on a good knowledge of the biology of the insect, but also on an accurate modeling of the insect's distribution. We consider a compartmental approach and derive temporal and spatio-temporal models, using Advection-Diffusion-Reaction equations to model mosquito dispersal. Periodic releases of sterilized males are modeled with an impulse differential equation. Finally, using the splitting operator approach, and well-suited numerical methods for each operator, we provide numerical simulations for mosquito spreading, and test different vector control scenarios. This work is the numerical analysis and computational companion of the paper by Kamgang and Sallet (Math. Biosc. 213 (2008), pp. 1-12) where threshold conditions for epidemiological models and the global stability of the disease-free equilibrium (DFE) are studied. We establish a discrete counterpart of the main continuous result that guarantees the global asymptotic stability (GAS) of the DFE for general epidemiological models. Then, we design nonstandard finite difference (NSFD) schemes in which the Metzler matrix structure of the continuous model is carefully incorporated and both Mickens' rules (World Scientific, Singapore, 1994) on the denominator of the discrete derivative and the nonlocal approximation of nonlinear terms are used in an innovative way. As a result of these strategies, our NSFD schemes are proved to be dynamically consistent with the continuous model, i.e., they replicate their basic features, including the GAS of the DFE, the linear stability of the endemic equilibrium (EE), the positivity of the solutions, the dissipativity of the system, and its inherent conservation law. The general analysis is made detailed for the MSEIR model for which the NSFD theta method is implemented, with emphasis on the computational aspects such as its convergence, or local truncation error. Numerical simulations that illustrate the theory are provided.
Abstract.We consider mathematical models describing dynamics of an elastic beam which is clamped at its left end to a vibrating support and which can move freely at its right end between two rigid obstacles. We model the contact with Signorini's complementary conditions between the displacement and the shear stress. For this infinite dimensional contact problem, we propose a family of fully discretized approximations and their convergence is proved. Moreover some examples of implementation are presented. The results obtained here are also valid in the case of a beam oscillating between two longitudinal rigid obstacles.Mathematics Subject Classification. 35L85, 65M12, 74H45.
