Dans les chaînes de montagne de formation récente : Caucase, Crimée, Alpes et Pyrénées orientales, la phase de surrection maxima est terminée, mais la néo-tectonique plio-quatemaire est active. Dans le Caucase et en Crimée, le soulèvement de la partie axiale delà chaîne peut atteindre 10 à 12 mm/ an, contre 2 à 4 mm/an pour les massifs cristallins externes (Mont Blanc, Rousses...) des Alpes occidentales. Le soulèvement est plus faible et plus diffus dans les Alpes du Sud et les Pyrénées. Il s'accompagne d'une subsidence active des avant-pays au nord du Caucase, de la mer Noire au pied du géanticlinal criméen, de la bordure côtière des Alpes du Sud et des Pyrénées, de la plaine padane ou de bassins intérieurs. Cette permanence du soulèvement et la décompression liée à une déglaciation récente se combinent avec l'agressivité du climat dans les régions méditerranéennes pour générer des phénomènes d'érosion catastrophiques : inondations, crues torrentielles, coulées de boues très fréquentes dans le Caucase, les Pyrénées orientales, les Alpes du Sud et la Crimée, tandis que les Alpes du Nord en France sont surtout affectées par des crues, des glissements de terrain, des écroulements gigantesques. Partout l'érosion est active, en relation avec le climat et l'endodynamique du relief.
