Cette contribution vise à interroger les significations des itinéraires de la neutralité chrétienne du mouvement jéhoviste au Cameroun face à un État ouvertement laïc entre 1938, année de son implantation et 2019, année de la fin de l’étude. Le contexte camerounais colonial et postcolonial correspond en effet aux configurations d’une « co-manipulation » « de la religion par l’État et des structures étatiques » (Njoya, 2006) dans la régulation symbolique du système politique. La structuration d’un quasi concordat entre l’État et les religions dans le vécu local de la laïcité conduit à une hiérarchisation charismatique des cultes au Cameroun par une dialectique étatique de classement et de déclassement des confessions religieuses. C’est dans ces configurations qu’émerge la « neutralité chrétienne » dans une remise en question de cette régulation quasi concordataire des religions au Cameroun. Cette neutralité chrétienne se définit en effet, comme un retrait volontaire des Témoins de Jéhovah des « affaires politiques des nations du monde actuel » (Zion’s Watch Tower, 1882, 8). Elle regroupe un ensemble d’attitudes et de comportements politiques dépendant d’un apolitisme religieux. Celui-ci va du refus de l’allégeance aux emblèmes nationaux (drapeau, hymne national, etc.) à l’abstention lors des scrutins électoraux. La neutralité chrétienne ou apolitisme jéhoviste apparaît transversale aux phases alternées de dissolution et de reconnaissance de ce mouvement messianique par l’État au Cameroun Blanchard, 2008). Quelles sont les différentes perceptions de la neutralité chrétienne au Cameroun ? À l’aide de l’approche socio-historique (Noiriel, 2008) et de la sociologie pragmatique (Lemieux, 2018), nous avons identifié deux grandes perceptions dans les trajectoires de la neutralité chrétienne au Cameroun. Une perception subversive de l’apolitisme jéhoviste sera d’abord dominante au cours des périodes coloniale et monopartisane. Elle précédera une autre perception liée à la relégitimation de la neutralité chrétienne au cours de la période de démocratisation du système politique camerounais. Il ressort de cette analyse que la neutralité chrétienne au Cameroun est un comportement consenti individuellement et collectivement par les Témoins de Jéhovah en vue de la survie de ce mouvement dans un contexte laïc hostile.
Cet article s’intéresse aux dimensions géopolitiques de la neutralité du sport au sein de la Confédération africaine de football (CAF). Il s’agit de montrer comment s’est structuré le déficit d’intérêt de cette confédération pour le mouvement Black Lives Matter (BLM). Il est lié à un travail de normalisation de la neutralité du sport au sein de la CAF. Cette neutralité est remise en question par une (ré)écriture permanente des règlements de l’organisation, non seulement à sa naissance, mais aussi pendant l’ère BLM, entre 1957 et 2021. Pour mener cette recherche, nous nous appuyons sur la presse généraliste et sportive, notamment avec des articles portant sur BLM. Des travaux sur la neutralité du sport, sur la CAF et sur BLM sont également mobilisés pour mieux comprendre les enjeux et les tensions autour de ce principe dans le football africain. Dans un premier temps, nous nous intéressons aux itinéraires géopolitiques de la neutralité du sport à la CAF. L’organisation a d’abord été créée dans le but de construire un panafricanisme sportif pour lutter contre la colonisation, l’apartheid et le racisme. Les différentes cohortes d’amendements des statuts de la CAF révèlent aussi des enjeux de pouvoir autour du droit de la neutralité sportive, allant dans le sens du renforcement d’une autonomie de l’institution panafricaine hostile à BLM. Les affaires Webo et Zaha dévoilent les tensions autour de la neutralité du sport dans le football africain, en insistant sur le caractère extraverti des mobilisations des footballeurs africains en faveur de BLM. Dans un second temps, nous identifions des grilles explicatives de l’échec de la transnationalisation de BLM dans le football africain. Le poids des alternances électorales à la CAF est décisif dans l’échec de l’implantation du mouvement entre 2017 et 2021. La conquête des postes de pouvoir dans la gouvernance africaine et mondiale du football permet d’observer une convergence des objectifs des diplomaties de reconnaissance sud-africaine et marocaine contre BLM. L’industrie du football africain est aussi hostile à BLM en invisibilisant la lutte contre le racisme et l’apartheid dans les politiques de Responsabilité Sociale de la CAF, servant des enjeux économiques, humanitaires et écologiques. Des sociétés civiles africaines divisées sur la question présentent enfin l’ancrage des mobilisations des footballeurs africains contre le racisme en dehors du continent, l’ambiguïté de la CAF vis-à-vis des violations de la neutralité du sport et son désir de ne pas froisser les multinationales et les États sponsors, comme des causes de la désaffection de BLM en Afrique. À travers les dimensions géopolitiques de la neutralité à la CAF transparait l’apparition d’une politisation du football, initialement marqué par son apolitisme. Les résistances de l’organisation par rapport à BLM ont des conséquences certaines sur la situation géopolitique du football africain : elles défendent l’autonomie d’un secteur sportif menacée par la réforme de sa gouvernance archaïque désinvestie de ces questions identitaires.
