AbstractPurpose -This paper seeks to build a mathematical model to deduct the twists distribution in the slub-yarn. Design/methodology/approach -The model, considering the shearing modulus and polar moment of inertia of the yarn, influenced by the yarn density, is established based on the bar torsion model. The twists distribution in the slub-yarn is concluded based on the analysis of the results. The rules were verified via an indirect method, by testing the breaking strength of the slub-yarn. Findings -The results of the analysis showed that twists in every section of the slub-yarn are in inverse proportion to the square of the line density of the corresponding section. Slub length is a key factor to the twist in the base yarn, and the increase of the slub length will increase the twist; while the multiple is the key factor to the slub twist, and the enhancement of the multiple will decrease the twist significantly.Research limitations/implications -The analysis cannot be verified via a direct method. A new, more conceivable direct method should be utilized to test the result. Originality/value -The paper builds a base for the research of the mechanical properties of slub-yarn and gives directions to the slub-yarn production.

In this study, the wicking properties of ring and compact-siro ring spun staple yarns were compared. The twist level, which is related to the structure of the staple yarns, was found to significantly influence the wicking property of the two kinds of yarn. Polyester staple fibers with 1.33 dtex × 38 mm were selected as the staple fiber material, and the effect of the twist level on the wicking property was investigated using the capillary rise method. The results show that with a decreasing twist coefficient, the wicking height increases with a decrease in yarn compactness. The compact-siro spun yarn showed better wicking properties owing to it special ply yarn structure. Furthermore, the tension property of the yarns decreased significantly with a decrease in the twist coefficient. Compact-siro spinning was carried out to obtain staple yarns with lower twist coefficients, and the yarns showed great improvement in terms of yarn strength, fiber straightness, and wicking properties. Thus, compact-siro spinning is an efficient method to improve the wicking properties of staple yarns.

Colored fibers can be blended in a certain proportion to achieve a specific color. It is a very hard task for the colorist to find a good recipe to meet the final product without the aid of computer. In this article, a color separation method for the colored fiber blends is discussed to substitute for some manual work. The fuzzy C‐means cluster is a way to group the color in the colored fiber blends image. The distance index, which is a key factor during the fuzzy C‐means cluster process, is calculated in the RGB color space and the HSV color space with some transformation. The final experiment result proved that the colors of each pixel in the blends' image can be replaced by corresponding cluster center associating colors in the HSV color space, and the main texture as well as the main color information about the fibers in the image is preserved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measurement methods based on the visual testing principle have been widely used for evaluating the wrinkle recovery property of fabrics; however, the cumbersome testing process and poor adaptability for various fabrics are the main shortcomings of these methods. Here, a facile mechanical testing method named the integrated shape retention evaluation system (ISRES) was developed, providing an alternative approach to assess the wrinkle recovery, as well as the compression recovery and elastic recovery of fabrics. The optimal system parameters of the ISRES in measuring the wrinkle recovery angle were determined using an orthogonal experiment design based on correlation analysis between the curve parameters from the force–displacement curves of the ISRES and the wrinkle recovery angles tested by a standard Shirley crease recovery tester. Moreover, the sensitivity of the ISRES for the differences of the wrinkle recovery of fabrics was analyzed. The results showed that the selected optimal system parameters were a good combination, and the ISRES with the optimal system parameters provided a feasible method to differentiate the wrinkle recovery of fabrics.

This study examined the superiority of the strength of compact-Siro spun yarn. First, the strength properties of four types of yarn-ring, compact, Siro, and compact-Siro spun yarn-were compared based on an experiment with 9.7 tex and 14.6 tex polyester yarns. Yarn unevenness and compactness were analyzed in terms of their influence on yarn strength. It was determined that compact spinning enhanced the strength distribution by improving the overall yarn compactness. Siro spinning significantly increased the minimum yarn strength by reducing unevenness. Furthermore, compact-Siro spun yarn, which incorporates the advantages of both compact and Siro, remarkably improved the yarn strength distribution. These results were verified in the first part of the experiment. Finally, the four types of yarn were applied in the same weaving process. The results indicated that the efficiency of weaving with compact-Siro pure polyester yarn was higher than that of other methods by 3%-6%, thereby confirming the superior productivity of the method.
