O estudo visa reunir e sintetizar informações científicas relacionadas às disfunções olfatórias provocadas pelo SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura realizada a partir de periódicos científicos publicados no período de agosto a dezembro de 2021. Foram incluídos artigos originais com revisões bibliográficas sistemáticas, estudos retrospectivos observacionais, estudos descritivos prospectivos, estudos caso-controle e estudos de meta-análises. Concluiu-se que os sintomas relacionados às disfunções olfatórias causadas pela COVID-19 oscilam de acordo com a idade, sexo, genética, estágio da doença e comorbidades pré-existentes. Ainda é incerto o mecanismo de atuação pelo vírus para promover alterações sensoriais. As principais evidências sugerem disseminação viral através do neuroepitélio da fenda olfatória, com consequente infiltração no bulbo olfatório ou mecanismo de perda neural, com a lesão direta dos neurônios sensoriais olfativos. Dada a complexidade da infecção causada pela COVID-19 torna-se primordial a continuidade de pesquisas temáticas, principalmente, em relação às novas variantes do SARS-CoV-2.
