Extracurricular services are regarded as essential services in school system. Studies suggest that access to the services lead to students' academic success. Literature shows that the use of qualitative approach to investigate extracurricular services is limited. In view of the foregoing, this study examined the perceived influence of extracurricular services on students' academic achievement in secondary schools. Twenty (20) principals were selected from the three senatorial districts of Kwara State using stratified, purposive and convenience sampling techniques. Instruments used include interview and observation methods to collect relevant data from the participants. Specifically, observation method was used to complement findings from interview. Our findings reveal that extracurricular services influenced students' academic achievement. Our findings revealed also that inadequate availability of extracurricular facilities and personnel are the factors militating against effective provision of extracurricular services. This study recommends that adequate extracurricular facilities (football pitch, volleyball court, hall for social activities, etc.) should be available in schools. Lastly, adequate extracurricular services personnel should be deployed to schools to ensure active participation of students in various activities.
Guidance and counselling is a service that all human beings need at one point of their life. There is no human being that has never got a problem at one point or another. Guidance counselling is a noble profession whose importance in the educational system of Nigeria is becoming increasingly recognized by the country’s educational planners and policy makers. Ideally a well-trained school counsellor should be available in each institution in the federation to deal with various aspects of students’ problems and this presupposes the establishment of school guidance and counselling from the primary up to the tertiary levels. The essentials services expected of guidance counsellor in schools was highlighted and the means through which guidance programmes could be enhanced for effective service delivery in Nigerian secondary schools were expatiated. The process involves putting the prevailing situation in proper perspective by identifying the challenges and counselling is a problems solver. The role of the counsellor is to coordinate all the school guidance personnel in order to achieve effective guidance and by extension, the school objectives. The paper however, recommended that guidance service should be integrated into the primary school curriculum and be taught as a class subject and that administration of each institution provides critical leadership and conducive work environment to accommodate the kind of flexible work schedule and organizing regular workshops, seminars and conferences for stakeholders in guidance and counselling.

Public secondary schools in Nigeria occupy a significant position for providing qualitative education, yet there has been increasing public discontent with the quality of students being produced in the country’s public secondary schools. Teachers are regarded as one of the resources necessary for achieving the goals of secondary education. It is against this backdrop that this study examined teachers’ collective efficacy as a predictor of students’ academic performance in North Central Nigeria. Three research questions and hypotheses were generated to guide the study, which made use of a correlation-type descriptive research design with a population consisting of all teachers in the North Central region. An instrument titled the Teachers’ Collective Efficacy Questionnaire (TCEQ) was developed to elicit pertinent data from the participants. Also, students’ academic achievement was measured. The results of the study revealed that no substantial nexus existed between the teachers’ experience and the students’ academic achievement. However, the teachers’ verbal encouragement was found to be an important predictor of the learners’ academic success. Similarly, the teachers’ academic emphasis was a significant predictor of the learners’ academic performance. Based on this, it was established that teachers’ collective efficacy is an important predictor that can be used to improve students’ academic achievement. The study recommended that education administrators should acquaint their staff with the importance of collective efficacy towards improving students’ academic performance. It was also recommended that the government should organize workshops, seminars, and conferences for the supervisors, principals, and teachers of schools on efficacy issues and that teachers should be well motivated to maintain a high degree of efficacy in their various schools.
Students are often faced with numerous challenges, which can bring on stress, anxiety, depression or relationship problems with those around them. Because of the foregoing, this study examined the principals’ perception of guidance and counselling in secondary schools. The study population consist of all principals in secondary schools in Kwara State, Nigeria. Non-probability sampling techniques (stratified, purposive and convenience) were employed to select 20 principals to participate in the study. An instrument titled “Interview Guide on Guidance and Counselling Services (IGGCS)” was used to collect relevant data from the principals while secondary data were obtained from the counselling department of the schools. Nvivo software (version 10) was used to analyse the data collected. The findings of the study revealed that principals believe the provision of counselling services had a significant impact on student's academic achievement, even though most of the secondary schools do not have a good counselling unit, qualified counsellors, and counselling facilities. This study recommends that a well-equipped counselling unit should be available in schools. Only certified counsellors should be deployed to offer counselling services to students. Lastly, students should be sensitized and encouraged by the school on the need for them to go for counselling to solve their numerous challenges.
As of the third quarter of 2018, the rate of unemployment stood at 23.13 percent as revealed by the National Bureau of Statistics. In view of the foregoing, this study proposes technopreneurship education as an effective strategy that can be used to reduce unemployment. Sequential mixed-methods research designs (quantitative and qualitative) were adopted for the study. The population for the quantitative part consists of 300 level students of universities in Kwara State, while lecturers and artisans in the universities formed the population for the qualitative part. Stratified, quota and random techniques were used to select 370 respondents while purposive and convenience techniques were adopted to select two lecturers and artisan. Research instruments titled “Technopreneurship Education and Business Intention Questionnaire (TBQ) and “Interview Protocol on Technopreneurship Education and Business Intention Questionnaire (IPTEQ)” were used to collect relevant data. Findings from both quantitative and qualitative methods revealed that the three dimensions of technopreneurship education (i.e., entrepreneurship course, entrepreneurship practical and internet facility) were significantly related to business intention. Also, findings show that inadequate facility and financial constraint constitute challenges that hinder technopreneurship, while adequate facility and availability of funds were perceived as the remedies to the challenges. Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended that government, banks and other stakeholders in education should assist universities in terms of providing financial assistance to students with business intention.
