We have reported that electrical acupuncture stimulation (ACU) increases blood fluidity by decreasing platelet aggregation. In this study, we investigated the mechanism causing the increase of blood fluidity. The effects of ACU on blood fluidity and platelet adhesion were examined using a Micro Channel Array Flow Analyzer (MC-FAN) and a laser scattering platelet aggregometer (PA-20). Male Wistar rats (7-8 weeks old) were used in the study. ACU (1 or 100 Hz, 3-5 V), which causes slight muscle twitching, was applied to the ZuSanli (ST-36) acupoint for 15 or 60 minutes once/day. Blood samples were collected from the inferior vena cava. ACU applied to ST-36 revealed significant increases in blood fluidity, while platelet adhesion activity decreased, regardless of the difference of stimulus time. The acupuncture had an immediate effect. Even if naloxone was administered during acupuncture stimulus, the blood flow time shortened in a similar way, as in the only acupuncture stimulus group. In addition, the effect of acupuncture on blood fluidity was inhibited by a β-antagonist. The results indicate that ACU affects blood fluidity depending on the acupoints, and that the effect of ACU might involve an endogenous adrenergic mechanism.
A case of brain stem capillary telangiectasia diagnosed by susceptibility-weighted imaging is reported. A small enhancing pontine lesion was found on postcontrast T1-weighted MR images in a 56-year-old woman with human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 infection. Imaging diagnosis was difficult with conventional MR imaging because the lesion did not show characteristic signal loss on conventional gradient-echo images. SWI was useful for imaging diagnosis as it demonstrated marked signal loss of the lesion.
The gelation of myosin has a very important role in meat products. We have already shown that myosin in low ionic strength solution containing L-histidine forms a transparent gel after heating. To clarify the mechanism of this unique gelation, we investigated the changes in the nature of myosin subfragments during heating in solutions with low and high ionic strengths with and without L-histidine. The hydrophobicity of myosin and heavy meromyosin (HMM) in low ionic strength solution containing L-histidine was lower than in high ionic strength solution. The SH contents of myosin and HMM in low ionic strength solution containing l-histidine did not change during the heating process, whereas in high ionic strength solution they decreased slightly. The heat-induced globular masses of HMM in low ionic strength solution containing L-histidine were smaller than those in high ionic strength solution. These findings suggested that the polymerization of HMM molecules by heating was suppressed in low ionic strength solution containing L-histidine, resulting in formation of the unique gel.
In industrialized countries, the turnover rate of preschool workers is extremely high and now represents a social problem. Consequently, it has become important to promote stable early care and educational environments for this population. Several factors related to working environments are known to affect turnover intention; however, the specific factors related to turnover intention among preschool workers have not yet been identified. Considering this, the objective of the present study was to determine factors associated with preschool workers’ willingness to continue working.The participants of this study were 1137 preschool workers based in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the participants’ data, with willingness to continue working for 5 years or more set as the dependent variable.Analysis of the results for all subjects clearly showed that male sex, older age, good mental health, high number of social supports, and good work engagement have a positive effect on willingness to continue working. Further, stratifying the participants in terms of age revealed that for preschool workers under 39 years, male sex, good mental health, high number of social supports, and good work engagement act positively in regard to willingness to continue working. Meanwhile, for those over 40 years, it was found that permanent employment and good work engagement act positively in this regard. Thus, work engagement was the only common factor between preschool workers under 39 and over 40.The findings of this cross-sectional study demonstrate that the factors associated with willingness to continue working among preschool workers differ between younger and older professionals. These findings underline the importance of considering age categories when attempting to maximize such professionals’ willingness to continue working.
