Benzodiazepínicos atuam na estimulação do ácido gama-aminobutírico, um neurotransmissor responsável pela inibição da atividade cerebral. Embora sejam eficazes em atenuar a sintomatologia dos agentes estressores do cotidiano moderno, são indicados clinicamente para psicopatologias específicas, como em transtornos de ansiedade e em quadros depressivos bem delimitados, não se mostrando como medicação de primeira escolha para outras condições de alterações mentais. Com o exacerbado aumento de prescrições e de uso de benzodiazepínicos, observa-se que seus efeitos colaterais e prejuízos a curto e longo prazo na qualidade de vida são desprezados. Este estudo tem como objetivo demonstrar, por meio de uma revisão narrativa, os efeitos colaterais do uso crônico e indiscriminado de benzodiazepínicos e os possíveis danos que esta prática pode causar aos indivíduos que consomem esta medicação. Como efeitos de curto prazo, tem-se sintomas conhecidos como “efeito rebote”, incluindo distúrbios do sono, letargia, sedação e incapacidade de realizar as atividades diárias. Quanto aos efeitos a longo prazo, destacam-se: perda de atenção e dificuldade de concentração, náuseas, vômitos, dores abdominais, articulares e torácicas, alucinações, alterações no comportamento, além de provocar tolerância e dependência e de gerar crises de abstinência caso o uso seja encerrado abruptamente. Foram encontrados também fortes indícios de relação entre o uso prolongado destes medicamentos e o desenvolvimento de demências. Em idosos existe ainda o risco de quedas devido à sonolência. Outro dado relevante é a ocorrência de amnésia anterógrada. Espera-se que essa revisão auxilie os profissionais da saúde, como médicos e farmacêuticos, quanto à instrução de seus pacientes que utilizam esses medicamentos, visto que o uso inadequado deles provoca tolerância, dependência e diversas outras reações adversas danosas. Almeja-se também que as informações aqui reportadas sirvam para esclarecer as pessoas que fazem o uso crônico e indiscriminado destas substâncias.
