For many music analysis problems, we need to know the presence of instruments for each time frame in a multi-instrument musical piece. However, such a frame-level instrument recognition task remains difficult, mainly due to the lack of labeled datasets. To address this issue, we present in this paper a large-scale dataset that contains synthetic polyphonic music with frame-level pitch and instrument labels. Moreover, we propose a simple yet novel network architecture to jointly predict the pitch and instrument for each frame. With this multitask learning method, the pitch information can be leveraged to predict the instruments, and also the other way around. And, by using the so-called pianoroll representation of music as the main target output of the model, our model also predicts the instruments that play each individual note event. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method for framelevel instrument recognition by comparing it with its singletask ablated versions and three state-of-the-art methods. We also demonstrate the result of the proposed method for multipitch streaming with real-world music. Music creation involves not only composing the different parts (e.g., melody, chords) of a musical work but also arranging/selecting the instruments to play the different parts. While the former has received increasing attention, the latter has not been much investigated. This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first deep learning models for rearranging music of arbitrary genres. Specifically, we build encoders and decoders that take a piece of polyphonic musical audio as input, and predict as output its musical score. We investigate disentanglement techniques such as adversarial training to separate latent factors that are related to the musical content (pitch) of different parts of the piece, and that are related to the instrumentation (timbre) of the parts per short-time segment. By disentangling pitch and timbre, our models have an idea of how each piece was composed and arranged. Moreover, the models can realize "composition style transfer" by rearranging a musical piece without much affecting its pitch content. We validate the effectiveness of the models by experiments on instrument activity detection and composition style transfer. Most music source separation systems require large collections of isolated sources for training, which can be difficult to obtain. In this work, we use musical scores, which are comparatively easy to obtain, as a weak label for training a source separation system. In contrast with previous score-informed separation approaches, our system does not require isolated sources, and score is used only as a training target, not required for inference. Our model consists of a separator that outputs a time-frequency mask for each instrument, and a transcriptor that acts as a critic, providing both temporal and frequency supervision to guide the learning of the separator. A harmonic mask constraint is introduced as another way of leveraging score information during training, and we propose two novel adversarial losses for additional fine-tuning of both the transcriptor and the separator. Results demonstrate that using score information outperforms temporal weak-labels, and adversarial structures lead to further improvements in both separation and transcription performance.

Transformer is a successful deep neural network (DNN) architecture that has shown its versatility not only in natural language processing but also in music information retrieval (MIR). In this paper, we present a novel Transformer-based approach to tackle beat and downbeat tracking. This approach employs SpecTNT (Spectral-Temporal Transformer in Transformer), a variant of Transformer that models both spectral and temporal dimensions of a time-frequency input of music audio. A SpecTNT model uses a stack of blocks, where each consists of two levels of Transformer encoders. The lower-level (or spectral) encoder handles the spectral features and enables the model to pay attention to harmonic components of each frame. Since downbeats indicate bar boundaries and are often accompanied by harmonic changes, this step may help downbeat modeling. The upper-level (or temporal) encoder aggregates useful local spectral information to pay attention to beat/downbeat positions. We also propose an architecture that combines SpecTNT with a state-ofthe-art model, Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN), to further improve the performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach can significantly outperform TCN in downbeat tracking while maintaining comparable result in beat tracking.

Conventional music structure analysis algorithms aim to divide a song into segments and to group them with abstract labels (e.g., 'A', 'B', and 'C'). However, explicitly identifying the function of each segment (e.g., 'verse' or 'chorus') is rarely attempted, but has many applications. We introduce a multi-task deep learning framework to model these structural semantic labels directly from audio by estimating "verseness," "chorusness," and so forth, as a function of time. We propose a 7-class taxonomy (i.e., intro, verse, chorus, bridge, outro, instrumental, and silence) and provide rules to consolidate annotations from four disparate datasets. We also propose to use a spectral-temporal Transformer-based model, called SpecTNT, which can be trained with an additional connectionist temporal localization (CTL) loss. In cross-dataset evaluations using four public datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the SpecTNT model and CTL loss, and obtain strong results overall: the proposed system outperforms state-of-the-art chorus-detection and boundary-detection methods at detecting choruses and boundaries, respectively.

Music source separation is a core task in music information retrieval which has seen a dramatic improvement in the past years. Nevertheless, most of the existing systems focus exclusively on the problem of source separation itself and ignore the utilization of other -possibly related-MIR tasks which could lead to additional quality gains. In this work, we propose a novel multitask structure to investigate using instrument activation information to improve source separation performance. Furthermore, we investigate our system on six independent instruments, a more realistic scenario than the three instruments included in the widelyused MUSDB dataset, by leveraging a combination of the MedleyDB and Mixing Secrets datasets. The results show that our proposed multitask model outperforms the baseline Open-Unmix model on the mixture of Mixing Secrets and MedleyDB dataset while maintaining comparable performance on the MUSDB dataset.
