ABSTRACTThis paper regards the development of a patient counselling programme in a cardiac surgery division with the approach of patientcentred communication. The aim of the paper is to present the rationale, development and the implementation of the programme. The intervention process is reviewed from the assessment phase in which the nurse estimates the patient needs, through to intervention, in which she responds to these needs by various tools. She is a leading nurse in the ward -a clinical guide for new staff and is involved in developing intervention projects. She has presented nursing projects in several conferences and published an article in a local academic journal.Galit Kaufman has an MA in Sociology of Health, specialising in intensive care and heart with follow-up of patients discharged after cardiac surgery.
