In meta-analysis, the assessment of graphs is widely used in an attempt to identify or rule out heterogeneity and publication bias. A variety of graphs are available for this purpose. To date, however, there has been no comparative evaluation of the performance of these graphs. With the objective of assessing the reproducibility and validity of graph ratings, the authors simulated 100 meta-analyses from 4 scenarios that covered situations with and without heterogeneity and publication bias. From each meta-analysis, the authors produced 11 types of graphs (box plot, weighted box plot, standardized residual histogram, normal quantile plot, forest plot, 3 kinds of funnel plots, trim-and-fill plot, Galbraith plot, and L'Abbé plot), and 3 reviewers assessed the resulting 1,100 plots. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) for reproducibility of the graph ratings ranged from poor (ICC = 0.34) to high (ICC = 0.91). Ratings of the forest plot and the standardized residual histogram were best associated with parameter heterogeneity. Association between graph ratings and publication bias (censorship of studies) was poor. Meta-analysts should be selective in the graphs they choose for the exploration of their data.

BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is a serious social issue in Japan. In order to start effective interventions for abused women, the appropriate method of screening for IPV in healthcare settings needs clarifying. The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a face-to-face interview with a self-administered questionnaire. We used the Violence Against Women Screen (VAWS), a Japanese screening instrument for intimate partner violence (IPV), for identifying pregnant women who have experienced abuse.MethodsWe conducted a randomised controlled trial to screen participants at three points in time in a prenatal clinic in Tokyo, Japan. There were 328 consenting women between 14 and 25 weeks of pregnancy who were consecutively selected and randomly assigned to either the interview or self-administered questionnaire group. Both groups completed the same screening instrument three times during their pregnancy. The primary outcome was the total number of women identified by each screening method and the secondary outcome was the effect of the screening as measured by the women's comfort level and their expressed need to consult with the nurse.ResultsFor all three screenings, the identification rate in the interview group was significantly lower than that for the self-administered questionnaire group (relative risk 0.66, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.97), even after controlling for smoking (adjusted odds ratio 0.59, 95% CI 0.35 to 0.98). The two groups did not differ for secondary outcomes.ConclusionsThe self-administered questionnaire identified more IPV than the face-to-face interview when screening pregnant women in a Japanese prenatal clinic.Trial RegistrationUMIN-CTRC000000353

Aim:  To review published studies focusing on the screening of domestic violence (DV) against women, in particular, the instruments, the screening methods and the interventions used to help abused women after screening. Based on the results of the review, the suitability of introducing routine screening for DV in the perinatal setting in Japan would be assessed. Methods:  National Guideline Clearinghouse database, HSTAT, PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library and the Ichushi‐Web were all used to searched from when records were first held until February 2003 for eligible primary studies and systematic reviews for this literature review. Each selected article was independently read and appraised by two reviewers who finally selected 12 primary studies and three systematic reviews that fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. Results:  Three studies evaluated screening instruments for DV (i.e. Abuse Assessment Screen, Partner Violence Screen and Violence Against Women Screen) and of these, the Violence Against Women Screen was the most valid, reliable and suitable for use in the clinical setting in Japan. The three studies that examined the screening method had differing results, but the one conducted in Japan showed a significantly higher rate of identification in the self‐administered questionnaire group compared with the interview group. The six studies that tested the effectiveness of interventions for abused women showed that counseling sessions after screening and the advocacy program for postsheltered women were effective in reducing DV. Conclusion:  Routine screening of all pregnant women in Japan for DV should be introduced, considering the high burden of suffering that women expose to DV experience, and the existence of both acceptable screening instruments and effective interventions.

The Japan Academy of Midwifery has developed the Evidence-Based Care During Childbirth Guideline for Midwives (2012 edition) containing care policies for healthy low risk women and newborns. In order to disseminate the guideline, contents of the guideline are introduced for midwives through the current paper. A total of twenty nine clinical questions were included in the guideline. For each clinical question, evidence statement, its explanations and references were prepared. Evidence-based and women-centered care would be promoted if midwives adopt care policy in the guideline at hospitals, clinics and independent midwives.
