Aims  The potential difference in the impacts of lifestyle factors (LFs) on progression from healthy to first cardiometabolic disease (FCMD), subsequently to cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), and further to death is unclear. Methods and results  We used data from the China Kadoorie Biobank of 461 047 adults aged 30–79 free of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes at baseline. Cardiometabolic multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of two or three CMDs, including ischaemic heart disease (IHD), stroke, and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We used multi-state model to analyse the impacts of high-risk LFs (current smoking or quitting because of illness, current excessive alcohol drinking or quitting, poor diet, physical inactivity, and unhealthy body shape) on the progression of CMD. During a median follow-up of 11.2 years, 87 687 participants developed at least one CMD, 14 164 developed CMM, and 17 541 died afterwards. Five high-risk LFs played crucial but different roles in all transitions from healthy to FCMD, to CMM, and then to death. The hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) per one-factor increase were 1.20 (1.19, 1.21) and 1.14 (1.11, 1.16) for transitions from healthy to FCMD, and from FCMD to CMM, and 1.21 (1.19, 1.23), 1.12 (1.10, 1.15), and 1.10 (1.06, 1.15) for mortality risk from healthy, FCMD, and CMM, respectively. When we further divided FCMDs into IHD, ischaemic stroke, haemorrhagic stroke, and T2D, we found that LFs played different roles in disease-specific transitions even within the same transition stage. Conclusion  Assuming causality exists, our findings emphasize the significance of integrating comprehensive lifestyle interventions into both health management and CMD management.

The Friedländer condensation was employed to synthesize two series of 3,3'-polymethylene bridged ligands, L, based on 2-(2'-pyridyl)-benzo[h]quinoline and 2,2'-bibenzo[h]quinoline (BHQ) along with the fully aromatic naphtho[1,2-b]-1,10-phenanthroline. Complexes [Cu(L)(2)](+) were prepared as their perchlorate or hexafluorophosphate salts. The solution state structures were analyzed by NMR and shielding effects reflected significant interligand pi-stacking interaction in the complexes. Solid-state structures of the complexes where L = 3,3'-tetramethylene-2,2'-bibenzo[h]quinoline or naphtho[1,2-b]-1,10-phenanthroline were determined by X-ray analysis. The tetramethylene bridged complex showed a highly distorted coordination geometry with the BHQ rings of opposing ligands pi-stacked at a interplanar distance of about 3.37 A. Complexes of the BHQ series showed a pronounced MLCT absorption maximum which shifted bathochromically from 496 to 610 nm as the 3,3'-bridge decreased from 4 to 2 carbons. The BHQ complexes luminesced strongly in CH(2)Cl(2) solution and the tetramethylene-bridged system showed the longest yet recorded excited-state lifetime for a copper MLCT excited state, tau = 5.3 micros and Phi = 0.10.

Nitration of 3-bromobenzaldehyde followed by sodium dithionite reduction provides 5-bromo-2-aminobenzaldehyde, which undergoes the Friedländer condensation with a variety of enolizable ketones to afford bidentate and tridentate 6-bromoquinoline derivatives. These species may be dimerized with Ni(0) to form biquinolines or treated under Sonogashira conditions to afford 6-alkynyl derivatives. Examination of optical properties indicate an unusually high emission quantum yield for 6,6'-biquinolines. [structure: see text]

The trans-chelating ligand 1,2-bis(2‘-pyridylethynyl)benzene (1) was prepared in a single step by a Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. Treatment of 1 with trans-bis(acetonitrile)palladium chloride provides the complex [Pd(1)Cl2] while treatment with tetrakis(acetonitrile)palladium(II) tetrafluoroborate provides the 2:1 complex [Pd(1)2](BF4]2. The structural, spectroscopic, and thermal properties of 1 and its Pd(II) complexes are examined.
