Abstract: This study analyses “Famigerado”, a short story by Guimarães Rosa, taking Simple Forms, by André Jolles, and psychoanalysis as theoretical references. Rosa’s story is seen as an inverted riddle, by which questioner and answerer switch positions. The modernization process in Brazil’s hinterland during the 60s provides a framework to the conflict between the story’s hero, an illiterate “jagunço”, and its learned narrator. The tensions and ambiguities thus revealed can find in psychoanalysis and stylistics a source of enlightenment. Keywords: Brazilian Short-Story; Guimarães Rosa; riddle; ambiguity; Psychoanalysis.
