The Neotropical fruit bats of the genus Artibeus are distributed from southern México to northern Argentina occupying a wide array of different habitats. Of the 14 species present in Colombia, 85.7 % (n = 12) occur in the department of Choco. Bat inventories were carried out by the Consejo Comunitario Mayor de Istmina and Medio San Juan (COCOMINSA) and the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó in the corregimiento de Chiqui Choqui, municipality of Medio San Juan. We present a new record of A. aequatorialis for Colombia, that makes an important addition to the bat fauna of Chocoan biogeographic region and is the northernmost record of the species. Our specimen of A. aequatorialis was collected in the Chiqui Choqui locality, that belongs to the district of Alto-Atrato San Juan that is a poorly study area, whose diversity is threatened by human activities, like deforestation and mining activities.
We report the northernmost collecting locality for the nectar-feeding bat Hsunycteris cadenai in the Colombian Biogeographic Chocó. This record extends the range of the species to 224 km north of the species type locality in Zabaletas river, department of Valle del Cauca, and 75 km west of Santa Cecilia, Risaralda. The specimen was collected on May 5, 2010, in a primary forest in Pacurita, Central Chocó. Our specimen of H. cadenai (CMCH 883) exhibits all the diagnostic characteristics of the species including the lateral projections on the postorbital region, a skull length greater than 20.0 mm, and a forearm shorter than 34.5 mm. We also present an updated distribution map for the species.
© 2018. Plants used as refuge by bats in the central rainforest of Chocó, Colombia AbstractThe selection of leaves in the construction of shelters by some species of frugivorous bats of the Phyllstomidae family is one of the most interesting examples of plant-animal relationship. The species of plants used as refuges are largely determined by the biogeographic region inhabited by the bats. The objective of the present study was to describe the patterns of selection and utilization of plants as shelters by these bats in the central rainforest of Chocó, Colombia. We took samples in primary forests in the locality of Pacurita, municipality of Quibdó, Chocó. We searched and located refuges during random walks inside the forest along natural trails, roads and streams. We georeferenced each refuge, and we described the species of plant used, the height from the soil, as well as the habitability, occupation and temperature, which was registered using a laser thermometer; we classified the refuges according to their architecture. In inhabited refuges the cat...
