The decay rate of 57 Fe nuclei in an 57 FeBO 3 crystal excited by 14.4 keV synchrotron radiation pulses was controlled by switching the direction of the crystal magnetization. Abrupt switching some nanoseconds after excitation suppresses the coherent nuclear decay. Switching back at later times restores it, starting with an intense radiation spike. The enhanced delayed reemission is due to the release of the energy stored during the period of suppression. Suppression and restoration originate from drastic changes of the nuclear states and of the interference within the nuclear transitions.

We observe three effects in the Bragg diffraction of x rays in backscattering geometry from asymmetrically cut crystals. First, exact Bragg backscattering takes place not at normal incidence to the reflecting atomic planes. Second, a well-collimated (approximately 1 microrad) beam is transformed after the Bragg reflection into a strongly divergent beam (230 microrad) with reflection angle dependent on x-ray wavelength--an effect of angular dispersion. The asymmetrically cut crystal thus behaves like an optical prism, dispersing an incident collimated polychromatic beam. The dispersion rate is approximately 8.5 mrad/eV. Third, parasitic Bragg reflections accompanying Bragg backreflection are suppressed. These effects offer a radically new means for monochromatization of x rays not limited by the intrinsic width of the Bragg reflection.

We measured phonon frequencies and linewidths in doped and undoped BaFe 2 As 2 single crystals by inelastic x-ray scattering and compared our results with density functional theory calculations. In agreement with previous work, the calculated frequencies of some phonons depended on whether the ground state was magnetic or not and, in the former case, whether phonon wave vector was parallel or perpendicular to the magnetic ordering wave vector. The experimental results agreed better with the magnetic calculation than with zero Fe moment calculations, except the peak splitting expected due to magnetic domain twinning was not observed. Furthermore, phonon frequencies were unaffected by the breakdown of the magnetic ground state due to either doping or increased temperature. Based on these results we propose that phonons strongly couple not to the static order, but to high frequency magnetic fluctuations.
