We investigate the transport through a quantum ring, a dot and a barrier embedded in a nanowire in a homogeneous perpendicular magnetic field. To be able to treat scattering potentials of finite extent in magnetic field we use a mixed momentum-coordinate representation to obtain an integral equation for the multiband scattering matrix. For a large embedded quantum ring we are able to obtain Aharanov-Bohm type of oscillations with superimposed narrow resonances caused by interaction with quasi-bound states in the ring. We also employ scattering matrix approach to calculate the conductance through a semi-extended barrier or well in the wire. The numerical implementations we resort to in order to describe the cases of weak and intermediate magnetic field allow us to produce high resolution maps of the "near field" scattering wave functions, which are used to shed light on the underlying scattering processes.
Cloud computing represents a paradigm shift driven by the increasing demand of Web based applications for elastic, scalable and efficient system architectures that can efficiently support their ever-growing data volume and large-scale data analysis. A typical data management system has to deal with real-time updates by individual users, and as well as periodical large scale analytical processing, indexing, and data extraction. While such operations may take place in the same domain, the design and development of the systems have somehow evolved independently for transactional and periodical analytical processing. Such a system-level separation has resulted in problems such as data freshness as well as serious data storage redundancy. Ideally, it would be more efficient to apply ad-hoc analytical processing on the same data directly. However, to the best of our knowledge, such an approach has not been adopted in real implementation.Intrigued by such an observation, we have designed and implemented epiC, an elastic power-aware data-itensive Cloud platform for supporting both data intensive analytical operations (ref. as OLAP) and online transactions (ref. as OLTP). In this paper, we present ES 2 -the elastic data storage system of epiC, which is designed to support both functionalities within the same storage. We present the system architecture and the functions of each system component, and experimental results which demonstrate the efficiency of the system.
Excitation-inhibition (E-I) imbalance is considered a hallmark of various neurodevelopmental disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. How genetic risk factors disrupt coordinated glutamatergic and GABAergic synapse formation to cause an E-I imbalance is not well understood. Here, we show that knockdown of Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1), a risk gene for major mental disorders, leads to E-I imbalance in mature dentate granule neurons. We found that excessive GABAergic inputs from parvalbumin-, but not somatostatin-, expressing interneurons enhance the formation of both glutamatergic and GABAergic synapses in immature mutant neurons. Following the switch in GABAergic signaling polarity from depolarizing to hyperpolarizing during neuronal maturation, heightened inhibition from excessive parvalbumin + GABAergic inputs causes loss of excitatory glutamatergic synapses in mature mutant neurons, resulting in an E-I imbalance. Our findings provide insights into the developmental role of depolarizing GABA in establishing E-I balance and how it can be influenced by genetic risk factors for mental disorders.
We develop a novel method of creating optical vortex array by the conversion of a standing-wave Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) mode. Theoretically, by employing the transformational relation, the standing-wave LG mode is verified to be transformed from a pair of crisscrossed Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes, embedded with optical vortex array, consists of a TEMn,m mode and a TEMm,n mode. Due to close correspondence between the transformational relation and the mode conversion of astigmatic lenses, we successfully generate the optical vortex array by transforming a standing-wave LG mode into the crisscrossed HG modes via a π/2 cylindrical lens mode converter. The investigation may provide useful insight in the study of the vortex light beam and its further applications.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
