The paper deals with one of the most relevant questions of semiosis in English lexicography. The article studies the mechanism of double encoding a message (verbally and pictographically) to optimize the perception, processing, and storage of information by the user of the dictionary. The aim of the given research is to determine the features of an English poly code dictionary entry as a communicative phenomenon of educational lexicography. The study is based on five lexicographic sources, traditionally called the big five. The research material includes 1640 poly code entries. The article suggests a new interpretation of a poly code entry as a threefold unity of a lemma (the headword), a verbal definition, and a picture. These three constituents jointly name, interpret, and visualize the meaning of a dictionary entry. The article also analyzes the configuration of a poly code entry informational potential in terms of increasing/decreasing of the information presented by the iconic constituent in comparison with the verbal one. The research proves that the whole set of poly code dictionary entries reflects a particular view of the world characterized by absolute anthropocentricity and specific Anglo-Saxon bias. The results of the performed research are significant for English language teaching and learning as they prove that pictographic illustrations that accompany verbal explanations are not purely ornamental. They optimize the readers’ activity of searching, understanding, and memorizing the necessary information.
The modern world being in a state of constant dynamic development raises the problem of the success of communication among individuals, communities and ethnic groups. The rapid process of globalization makes the world more connected and more dependent. Integration processes in the field of economy and politics lead to an increase in migration flows, the expansion of intercultural and interlanguage contacts. The role of the language of cross-cultural communication is extremely high. The English language is generally recognized as lingua franca of today 1. Learning a foreign language is unthinkable without the use of various information resources: textbooks, reference books, encyclopedias and, first of all, dictionaries. The article deals with the study of the verbalization of the ethnospecific aesthetic concept CHARM in contemporary English linguistic culture, which is performed on the basis of English explanatory dictionaries. The relevance of the study of the cognitive nature of charm is determined by the fact that this phenomenon has long been widely used in various professional fields such as public activity, management, social interaction, advertising, cinema, show business, etc., but without specific clear content and empirically detected characteristics for each of the mentioned above professional spheres. The complexity of detecting the concept of "charm" led to different approaches to its study. The given research is carried out within the framework of modern discourse analysis. The aim of the work is to highlight the ontological features of the English magical discourse. The material of the study was specialized websites presented on the Internet. The work uses such research methods as descriptive and contextual-interpretative. Magic discourse is a part of occult discourse which can be considered in three aspects: ontological, epistemological, and axiological. There are numerous web pages dedicated to various theoretical and applied aspects of magic on the Internet. The target audience is both professionals engaged in magic, and the general public of readers who, with the help of the instructions, can perform a certain ritual, cast a spell, etc. on their own. They are divided into thematic blocks, for example, witchcraft, crystals, divination, tarot, which mostly have a manipulative nature and are built according to the principle of typical instructional texts on the Internet using lexical units with positive connotations: best, peace, love, joy, great. Spells presented on the site are built on different stylistic devices that create the necessary atmosphere.
The article is devoted to the study of the linguo-cultural concept CHARM / CHARIVNIST in the English and Ukrainian languages. The aim of the work is to identify axiological characteristics of the CHARM / CHARIVNIST concept in English and Ukrainian Internet discourses on the basis of the text-recommendations “How to be Charming” / “Yak staty charivnoyu”, etc. The object of the research is concept CHARM / CHARIVNIST as an aesthetic component of the English and Ukrainian world images; the subject – similarity, difference and contrast in the ways of verbalization of concept CHARM / CHARIVNIST in the English and Ukrainian languages and peculiarities of the discourse realization of the given concept in corresponding linguocultures. Internal and external characteristics of the formation of the image of the CHARMING PERSON have been singled out. Internal features are semantic indicators of the concept CHARM / CHARIVNIST. External features are physical indicators of the concept and include mimic, eye contact, voice and touching features. For English-speaking recipients, such axiological feature as SELF-DEVELOPMENT or DEVELOPMENT OF PERSONALITY is important, which is foregrounded through its components: self-esteem, self-confidence, self-control, “simply-be-yourself” that appear first of all in the body language, for example, FACE (satisfaction, expressive), SMILE (genuine, big, friendly, sincerely), EYE CONTACT (direct), TOUCHING (light), HANDSHAKE (firm), and VOICE (boldness, confident, gentle, peaceful, direct). The following axiological features of the concept of CHARIVNIST in the Ukrainian texts-recommendations have been singled out: sincerity, cheerfulness, originality, with physical characteristics (eyes, voice, smile) serving as "external indicators of the charming inner world", for example, eyes as a mirror of the soul, a smile as a generator of positive fluids, etc. It has been proved that the discoursive feature of SELF-DEVELOPMENT of the English concept CHARM is contrasting. It has been established that such discoursive feature of the Ukrainian concept CHARIVNIST as ORIGINALITY is contrasting, and the discoursive features CONFIDENCE and VPEVNENIST are integral to the two concepts.
