This article explores the attitude of three scholars of the Indian subcontinent to this phenomenon, namely, Muhammad "All, 'Abdullah Yusuf'.Mí and Abu I-Kalâm Äzäd. Their oudooks on this subject differed, sometimes quite substantively, ft-om those of institutionalized religious leaders. Yet their standpoints on religious plurahsm were multifarious. Initially, the concept of religious pluralism is interrogated; followed by an overview of the cultural milieu during which they lived in order to contextualize our appraisal The views of each scholar is then separately analysed before concluding remarks about the similarities and differences in their standpoints.
