A research project, the "Construction of Frailty Cohort for Elderly and Intervention Study," funded by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, has been ongoing since December 2015. The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) aims to identify risk factors for adverse outcomes associated with frailty in community-dwelling older adults, as well as means of prevention. KFACS is a multicenter, longitudinal study, with the baseline survey being conducted in 2016-2017. The sample (n=3,000) consists of those aged 70-84 years, stratified by age and gender, recruited from urban and rural regions nationwide. An in-person interview and health examination are performed every 2 years. This project is also conducting many intervention studies. Project interventions focus on nutrition and exercise. The nutritional intervention study compares the effects of 1.2 g/kg versus 1.5 g/kg daily protein intake on sarcopenia and frailty in older Koreans. The exercise trial examines the effectiveness of an information and communication technology-based program in preventing or reducing frailty.
Background/Aim: Uterine mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) is a rare malignant tumor of the female genital tract. Patients and Methods: We reviewed 237 endometrial carcinoma cases and investigated the clinicopathological and molecular characteristics of uterine MLA. Results: We found that 3.0% (7/237) of the endometrial carcinoma cases were MLAs. Compared to endometrial endometrioid carcinoma, MLA showed larger tumor size, deeper myometrial invasion, increasingly advanced-stage disease, and more frequent lymphovascular space invasion. All MLAs exhibited architectural diversity, compactly aggregated small tubules, eosinophilic intraluminal secretions, overlapped and angulated nuclei, scant cytoplasm, and presence of spindle cells. All the MLAs expressed at least two mesonephric markers. All except one MLA harbored activating Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog mutations. All patients with MLA developed postoperative metastases. MLA had the lowest progression-free survival rate among different histological types of endometrial carcinoma. Conclusion: Uterine MLA is a highly aggressive gynecological malignancy, showing unique morphological and molecular features, frequent recurrences and metastases, as well as poor prognosis.Mesonephric adenocarcinoma (MA) is a rare malignant tumor of the female genital tract. It is thought to originate from the mesonephric remnants (1-3), which are usually located in the lateral wall of the vagina and uterine cervix, the broad ligament, and the ovarian hilum (4, 5). The term mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) has been suggested for a malignant tumor arising in the uterine corpus and the adnexa. MLA shows similar histological, immunophenotypical, and genetic features to those of cervical MA (1,(6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12). It is morphologically characterized by various architectural patterns, such as tubular, ductal, papillary, spindle, solid, trabecular, retiform, and sex cord-like (1,6,8,9). Diverse growth patterns make it difficult 526
Introduction Korea is experiencing rapid population ageing, spurring an increased need for mental health services for the elderly. Approximately one-third of Korean older adults experience depressive symptoms, and Korea has the highest elder suicide rate among 34 developed nations. Mental health literacy is an important component of promoting mental health, yet studies on the concept have been conducted in few countries. Aim This study examines the level of mental health literacy among Korean older adults and identifies factors associated with their mental health literacy. Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 596 community-dwelling Korean adults aged 65 and older. Andersen's Behavioral Model of Health Services Use framed the study. Results Overall, participants displayed low levels of mental health literacy. They had difficulty recognizing their mental health issues and had limited knowledge about self-help strategies. Mental health literacy was positively associated with education, social support, social network and health status. Discussion and Implications This study highlights a need for efforts to increase mental health literacy among Korean older adults. Strategies that have the potential to empower this population to proactively attend to their mental health include community-based education and national mental health campaigns.
The purpose of this research is to examine the predictors of smartphone uses for health information-seeking (SHIS) in the Korean elderly. This research applies the comprehensive model of information seeking as a theoretical framework. Data reported in this study are from the 2016 Dementia Literacy Survey, and 235 elderly smartphone users were included in logistic regression model. SHIS was significantly predicted by younger age, higher education levels, having a regular exercise, higher medical expenditures, and health literacy. The findings of this study can help social workers understand the specific features of health information seeking in the Korean elderly.
Efforts to improve mental health literacy through community-based education programs may need to particularly target Korean older adults with the relevant socio-demographic characteristics to enhance their utilization of appropriate mental health services.
