Photodegradationsof polyvinyl chloride on various kinds of metal plates were studied by infrared spectroscopy.Slight, but obvious distinctions were found among different kinde of base metals at absorbances of 1725-1 and 1775 cm-1 of photo-exposed polyvinyl chloride films.In the accelerated tests, all samples showed the increase of absorption caused by the carbonyl group within 100 hrs.; in particular, the increase was rapid in the films on Zinc and Tin. Other samples, except those on Cobalt and Nickel, reached the equilibrium within 300 hrs.No remarkable differences were found on the surface of polyvinyl chloride films by scanning electrophotometry between the sample after outdoor exposure and that after acceleration by carbon arc.
