Recent developments in the engineering industry have created a demand for advanced materials with superior mechanical properties and high-quality surface finishes. Some of the conventional finishing methods such as lapping, grinding, honing, and polishing are now being replaced by non-conventional finishing processes. Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) is a non-conventional superfinishing process in which magnetic abrasive particles interact with a magnetic field in the finishing zone to remove materials to achieve very high surface finishing and deburring simultaneously. In this review paper, the working principles, processing parameters, and current limitations for the MAF process are examined via reviewing important work in the literature. Additionally, future developments of the MAF process are discussed.
In this research, short jute fiber reinforced polylactide composite, unidirectional long fiber reinforced polylactide composite and a sandwich structure polylactide composite were fabricated and the mechanical properties were tested. The mechanical properties of the fabricated composites were compared with those of a prototype spare tyre compartment cover of a passenger car. Tensile strength and flexural strength of all the composites are higher than those of the spare tyre compartment cover. The results show that the polylactide composites are applicable to car interior plates.
This study investigated the influence of electrospun polyurethane mats containing different contents of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) stacked in between basalt fabric layers to form a composite laminate. The composite laminate was fabricated using a vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process. Flexural test were carried out to investigate the strength and stiffness of composites for each configuration, while the failure characteristics were observed using a field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analysis. The results showed that flexural strength and stiffness of the hybrid composites with increasing CNT content in polyurethane (PU) nanofiber were increased by 6.5% and 17.3%, respectively. Furthermore, the addition of surfactants for the dispersion of CNTs in nanofibers significantly improved the flexural property of the composite interply basalt fabric-CNT/PU laminates. This study proved that the use of multi-scale reinforcement fillers with good and homogeneous dispersion increased the mechanical performance of the composite.
