En un entorno cada vez más cambiante y global, donde es necesario dar repuestas rápidas y eficientes a los retos que se presentan, es esencial mantener ventajas competitivas para poder sobrevivir. La mejora continua forma parte del conjunto de activos intangibles que permite a las empresas responder o incluso anticiparse a los cambios y obtener una ventaja competitiva muy difícil de copiar por el origen de su naturaleza; aunque también difícil de implementar por la misma causa. Estos activos intangibles están basados en patrones de conducta complejos de adquirir y medir y que cuesta mantener en el tiempo.Esto justifica el interés que la mejora continua sigue teniendo actualmente; son muchos los ejemplos conocidos de éxito, pero también son muchas las empresas que fracasan en la implementación de estos programas o que a pesar de ser capaces de lanzarlos con éxito no consiguen mantenerlos en el tiempo.Este trabajo tiene como objetivo revisar los aspectos más importantes a la hora de implantar la mejora o innovación continua en la gestión de operaciones, para ayudar a las empresas que deciden implantarla asegurando su éxito y mantenimiento, y contribuir en lo posible al desarrollo de una teoría en estrecha conexión con la práctica.Para ello se ha realizado una profunda revisión de la literatura, en su mayor parte artículos publicados en los últimos cinco años, aunque aparecen algunos anteriores debido a su importancia.Seguidamente nos hemos planteado el estudio de cuatro casos. Las empresas han sido elegidas por tratarse de empresas medianas, líderes en sus sectores, que han fracasado en su primer intento de implementación de un programa de mejora y que se encuentran actualmente en diferentes estados de evolución. Incluyendo empresas de fabricación y también de marketing y ventas (una de las cuatro). Se trata en concreto de cuatro empresas diferentes que se abordan como dos estudios de casos y estas junto con dos empresas más como un estudio multicaso.La metodología empleada ha sido la observación participante, en dos de las compañías, por considerarse la más adecuada para resolver ciertos tipos de problemas prácticos donde las experiencias de los participantes son importantes y el contexto es fundamental. Los datos de la tercera empresa se han obtenido a través de entrevistas, cuestionarios, análisis de documentación y visitas. Hay una cuarta empresa cuyos datos proceden de un estudio previo realizado por el director de esta tesis.Se puede observar que este campo está en una etapa temprana de madurez y aún no existe una unidad de medida y método, aunque se han hecho avances importantes a partir del 2006 en cuanto a unidad de definición del concepto. No obstante autores como Boer y Gertsen indican que aún es necesario perfilar y completar los modelos teóricos existentes y sobre todo abundante investigación para validar dichos modelos con estudios cualitativos.
