This U.S. national survey of online journalism professionals and instructors examines and compares their perceptions of skills, concepts, and duties. It offers updated insights into the changes taking place in online journalism classrooms and newsrooms, and uncovers the discordance between online journalism education and practice. The results show that online journalism education is tied to traditional journalism in many ways, but is not merely a more technologically focused version of traditional journalism. Future journalists should be trained to be well-versed in multiple aspects of journalism and technology, rather than specializing in only one or two types of tasks.
This study explores mass media's agenda-setting function in a context of increased globalization to determine whether the theory, which was built upon intra-nation environments, functions in the global setting. It matches public agendas with media agendas to investigate agenda-setting effects in 11 countries worldwide, then compares media agendas across countries to consider whether inter-nation intermedia influence exists. Results suggest a general pattern of the agenda-setting function of mass media in the countries examined. The study finds evidence of inter-nation intermedia influence and thus presents a new way to look at the intermedia agenda-setting relationshipmoving this research from comparisons within a local area to cross-national intermedia comparisons. Furthermore, this study checks for evidence of directional inter-nation intermedia agenda-setting. The findings suggest a complex inter-nation intermedia relationship and imply that, in the age of globalization, the simple 'powerful West' reasoning derived from the old days may need to be rethought and updated.
Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of M22 Optimal Pulsed Technology (OPT) applied in patients with age-related cataract and Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) in perioperative period. Methods: This prospective observational study was carried out in the Jinan Mingshui Eye Hospital (Zhangqiu, China). We studied 60 patients (30 in the OPT treatment group and 30 in the conventional surgery group) with age-related cataract and MGD who underwent phacoemulsification and evaluated the efficacy of OPT treatment before and 1 month and 3 months after surgery. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, biomicroscopic examination of lid margins, Meibomian gland yielding secretion score (MGYSS), corneal fluorescein staining scores (CFS), tear film break-up time (TBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH) and the morphology of the MG (meibography) followed by Keratograph 5 M (K5M) were used to assess the patients' conditions. Results: There were significant differences in the scores of OSDI, MGYSS, TBUT, and CFS between the preoperative and postoperative outcomes (p < 0.05). In the OPT treatment group, the postoperative ocular surface condition was obviously better and the patient satisfaction rate was higher than those before surgery. There were significant differences in the scores of OSDI, EMAS, MGYSS and CFS before and 1 month after surgery (p < 0.05). In addition, there were also significant differences in the scores of OSDI, EMAS, MGYSS and MGLS before and 3 months after surgery (p < 0.05). No complications appeared during OPT treatment. Conclusions: Cataract surgery can aggravate MGD and is detrimental to ocular surface health. OPT treatment was a safe and effective intervention for patients with MGD and cataract during perioperative period.
This cross-nation, multi-event study examined 142 news stories from CCTV and CNN on two major terrorist attacks in China and the United States. It aimed to unveil how press system and national interest come into play in influencing media coverage of terrorism. Framing analyses were conducted in terms of attitude toward local government and perpetrators, news origin and source, coverage theme, definition of the incident, and attribution of cause of the incident. Findings suggest that, in reporting these two significant terrorist attacks, media of the two countries employed varied framing strategies based on their ideological backgrounds and national interests. The framing strategies utilized by the two media outlets are interpreted and discussed.
This exploratory study identifies journalism students’ attitudes, level of cognition and proficiency in data journalism (DJ). A survey of 121 college journalism students in Hong Kong, combined with in-depth interviews, found that: (a) while journalism students are eager to understand what is DJ and its practice, they do not have comprehensive knowledge of data collection, data analysis and interpretation; (b) computational tools are absent from current journalism curricula, which leads to students’ misperception about data usage in news reporting; (c) while students have high willingness for learning DJ, about half of those surveyed expressed a dislike of data work. Gender, year in school and major course of study play a role in the students’ varied perceptions of DJ. Male students mastered more DJ-related knowledge than their female counterparts. Those majoring in Chinese journalism show the least interest in DJ or learning its substance.
