3D morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), crystallized in the presence of diluents of poly(1,3-trimethylene adipate) and poly(ethylene oxide), is probed using a novel approach coupled with selective etching. For interpreting the mechanisms of crystal periodic aggregation, various microscopic techniques and synchrotron microbeam X-ray analysis are used to observe the top surface in connection with the 3D crystal assemblies. Periodic grating architectures, with the cross-bar pitch exactly matching with the optical band spacing, are proved in banded PHB. The crystals under the ridge branch out to spawn finer crystals orienting/bending horizontally underneath the valley band, repeating till species drainage or impingement. The grating structure in the banded PHB resembles many nature's iridescence crystals and is further proved by photonic reflection results as a critical breakthrough novel finding.

Fibrosis-related disorders account for an enormous burden of disease-associated morbidity and mortality worldwide. Fibrosis is defined by excessive extracellular matrix deposition at fibrotic foci in the organ tissue following injury, resulting in abnormal architecture, impaired function and ultimately, organ failure. To date, there lacks effective pharmacological therapy to target fibrosis per se, highlighting the urgent need to identify novel drug targets against organ fibrosis. Recently, we have discovered the critical role of a fibroblasts-enriched endoplasmic reticulum protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), thioredoxin domain containing 5 (TXNDC5), in cardiac, pulmonary, renal and liver fibrosis, showing TXNDC5 is required for the activation of fibrogenic transforming growth factor-β signaling cascades depending on its catalytic activity as a PDI. Moreover, deletion of TXNDC5 in fibroblasts ameliorates organ fibrosis and preserves organ function by inhibiting myofibroblasts activation, proliferation and extracellular matrix production. In this review, we detailed the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which TXNDC5 promotes fibrogenesis in various tissue types and summarized potential therapeutic strategies targeting TXNDC5 to treat organ fibrosis.

Lithium metal anode material suffers from the formation of a dendritic structure and manufacturing difficulties in Li metal batteries. Although anode-free lithium metal batteries (AFLMBs) have received broad interest due to their high energy density and easy fabrication, controlling the morphology of electrodeposited Li is challenging. In this work, we report on the use of mesoporous silica thin films (MSTFs) with perpendicular nanochannel (pore size ∼6 nm) stacking on a stainless steel (SS) substrate as the MSTF⊥SS for advancing AFLMBs. The MSTF⊥SS substrate with inorganic structures improves the stability of the Li plating/stripping process in Li-MSTF⊥SS cells at a current density of 2 mA cm −2 and capacity of 2 mAh cm −2 . A LiFePO 4 cathode (mass loading: ∼12 mg cm −2 ) paired with the MSTF⊥SS electrode delivered an initial discharge capacity of 154 mA h g −1 , which is ∼20% higher than that of the bare SS electrode at a C rate of 0.1C. Grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering results suggest that MSTF regulates the Li electrodeposition process with individual microcrystals and leads to the formation of Li(110). Also, the electrodeposited Li film with a uniform surface is obtained on the MSTF⊥SS substrate. The designed porous MSTF with high stability, ultrasmall pore size, and lithiophilic properties enhances the performance of AFLMBs with the LiFePO 4 cathode during 100 cycles.

ABSTRACT:Heritage buildings are highly prone to long term damage from the microclimate, scourge and vandalism, which can result in damaged materials, structures, painting and cultural heritage items. This study will focus on finding the displacement of wood structural members through the use of a 3D laser scanner and the 4D concept of time. The results will compare the scans from different periods to find the difference (if any) in the structural member position. Wood structures usually consist of numerous wood members connected to form the structure. However, these members can be damaged in various ways such as physical mechanisms, chemical reactions, and biological corrosion. When damage to the wood structure occurs, the structural displacement can be affected, and if affected severely, can lead to a building collapse. Monitoring of the structural displacement is the best way to discover damage immediately and to preserve the heritage building. However, the Cultural Heritage Preservation Law in Taiwan prohibits the installation of monitoring instruments (e.g strain gauge, accelerometer) in historic structures (heritage buildings). Scanning the wood structure with 3D lasers is the most non-intrusive method and quickly achieves displacement through visualization. The displacement scan results can be compared with different periods and different members to analyze the severity of damage. Once the 3D scanner is installed, the whole building is scanned, and point clouds created to build the visual building model. The structural displacement can be checked via the building model and the differences are measured between each member to find the high risk damaged areas or members with large displacement. Early detection of structural damage is the most effective way means of preservation.
