Reliable information on vegetation cover and its dynamics over time is essential for managing life, resources, and supporting policies. Although many related initiatives have been undertaken in Brazil since the 1980s, knowledge about its dry forests is still limited. In this study, we address the drivers of deforestation and their threat to the Brazilian dry forest called Caatinga. We evaluated the land cover dynamics and landscape metrics in the watershed of the Pontal River, as it has become one of the most socially and environmentally important areas in Brazil. The overall process consists of a systematic sampling grid of hydrological samples, where Landsat images (1975 to 2013) combined with the FRAGSTATS package were used to evaluate landscape metrics indices for the Caatinga. Data showed that the relative area (RA) decreased from 90.25% to 60.98% over the 38-year period, while fragmentation (PD) presented an increasing bias. In addition, the spatial distribution of both indices became more heterogeneous and clustered in the north. We suggest that appropriateness of land for farming was the leading cause of deforestation; rainfall is 112% more intense in the north of the watershed than in the south. Therefore, the northern fauna and flora have been significantly altered and reduced. The relationship between deforestation and time shows an increasing threat. Further studies evaluating these causes are needed to improve our understanding of the vegetation dynamics in this region.
A B S T R A C TThe unplanned use of the resources of the caatinga biome has been provoking several environmental degradation processes, which interferes negatively in the physical and biological systems of the semi-arid region. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the biophysical differences in areas of preserved and degraded caatinga, as well as irrigated and dry farming areas. Two images of the satellite Landsat 8 -Sensor OLI, corresponding to 05/22/2016 and 17/01/2017 were made. In which the reflectance, NDVI and NDWI calculations were applied. The results showed a difference in the values of NDVI and NDWI between the images of 2016 and 2017 according to the different types of vegetation. The areas of caatinga presented predominance of NDVI values from 0.4 to 0.6. Higher NDVI and NDWI characterized irrigated perimeters than in caatinga and dryland areas. Such differences between the analyzed days were the result of the absence and/or low amount of precipitation in the months before the imaging days. As for irrigated agriculture, which has a greater availability of water, than the influence on the nature of plants and in the moisture content present in the soil.
Linear correlation between rainfall and Leaf Area Index of the Caatinga biome A B S T R A C TIt is known that rainfall is a variable that is difficult to estimate, especially in semiarid regions. Even with the various studies and advances already obtained, it is still necessary to develop models that can provide more real estimates. In order to contribute to this line of research, this study aimed to assess the relationship between rainfall and the leaf area index in the caatinga biome. Therefore, a good spatial distribution of precipitation is necessary since with the use of remote sensing it is possible to obtain a good estimate of the spatial leaf area index. The precipitation data used in this study were obtained using the ETA model. The leaf area index data were obtained by the MODIS sensor. The simple linear correction method was used. The statistical relationships showed a good correlation between the leaf area index and precipitation. Thus, it is concluded that understanding the dynamics of the spatial and temporal leaf area index can help in understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of precipitation in the caatinga. It is believed that the precipitation estimate by the ETA model can be improved with the use of the leaf area index. Keywords: remote sensing, LAI, ETA model, rainfall, caatinga.

ABSTRACTGiven the current scenario of water crisis faced by Brazil, has been the need for immediate solutions involving better planning of water use and management of available water resources, harmonizing the various uses without, for this, there is the commitment of distribution water to strategic sectors such as food production through irrigation. The application of techniques and studies to optimize the use of water can be very useful at the local and regional level, in this sense, there was a case study in the Pontal Basin by proximity to the area of influence of major irrigated and poles of irrigated fruit as the Petrolina-Juazeiro, however, by low water availability do riacho do Pontal, irrigated agriculture has major limitations, however, crops such as banana are important to the region's economy. Thus, the aim of this study was to calculate how much water should be made available without waste, for the cultivation of banana in each production cycle, by estimating reference evapotranspiration, comparing the irrigation methods that can be applied in the area, and supplemental irrigation demand for methods with 75% and 90% efficiency. The result shows that there was a modification of the irrigation system and pass it to operate at 90% rather than 75% efficiency could be increased agricultural area on the order of 703 hec...
